Dd starting Concerta tomorrow- any tips? | ADHD Information

Share

The first time i took it I didn't notice any differences but my parents did. The only side effects I initially experienced were a loss of appitite that lasted for about 4 of the 6 hours that the meds are effective. good luck!

So dd (8) was prescribed Concerta 18 mg.

In my heart I know that meds are the way to go, but still, I am nervous.  You never know how it will go.

We got the prescription filled a couple of days ago, but decided to wait until Saturday to officially start- we have a very quiet weekend planned, and dh will be off work.  I have all of dd's favorite foods stocked up.

The pharmacist suggested that she have breakfast straight up with the Concerta- so that she gets a good amount of food into her before the meds kick in.

I guess I am watchfully waiting for side effects, both scared and hopeful at the same time.

Any other suggestions?  And how soon will we notice a difference- good or bad? (Of the bazillion questions we asked the doc., this is the *one* I forgot!)

Thanks all :)

The dose may be low, so you may see no real change. They usually start you low and you work your way up. Call the doctor immediatley if she needs an increase. She will lose her appetite until they wear off and she may have rebound. Have you heard of this or read about it here on the boards?

My son has been on concerta since he ended 1st grade and is now entering 6th. We moved up quickly with the milligrams, but it works for him. Don't get hung up on the dosage, it is NOT age based, it is how quickly the person burns it off.

Concerta also may not be her best med choice. DS couldn't handle adderall and strattera. EVeryone is different.

Best wishes!
