we went to the docs yesterday and he suggested a dose increase for my son. He has been on Vyvanse 30mg for 6-8 months. He also thought we could bring up the zoloft.
my son is sooooo skinney he eats nothing, has bad anxiety and he was doing so well at the beginning of the schol year and then he lost it and was hyper and not working well in school. Thank god for our teacher. now summer comes and I am getting behaivior like he is on no meds. very hyper, has BAD attitude and fits when he doesn't get his way. Although the behaivior change, I feel like I am a bad mom because I couln't work it out on the lower doses.
I am also worried if the dose increase will spur more side effects, he doesn't need that
Has anyone done a dose increase with the Vyvanse and what was it like?
We have been on vyvanse a year at then end of this month. We have actually had 2 increases (20 to 30, then to 50).
Tristan started on 20 mg while being part of a study. We knew the first week that it wasn't the right dose. We got kicked out tof the study because of medical history. We moved up to 30 mg and was doing great for 4-5 months. Tristan is in the mist of puberty and growing like a weed. He has gotten very tall but is still skinny. He has been at 125 lbs. for the last two years but has grown over a foot in height. We bumped it up to 50 when the symptom were getting worse, about 5-6 months ago. What happened with the increases was improved symptom control, with no increase in side effects. In fact, I think he is eating more. Lastnight he ate two frozen pizzas because he said he was hungry. My son eats very little during the day and does he eating after the meds after wear off.
Tristan and Dad wanted a med break for the summer. We tried it for 4 days and I have put him back on the meds but at a lower dose. (His doctor and I had decided to reduce the dose the summer, instead of a complete med break for the summer.) I was getting worried because the nights were getting very bad. He was quite obnoxious, refusing to listen, defiant and being very mean/rough with the dogs. I was seeing the worst because I spend more time with him, Dad goes to bed early because of his job. Tristan and I are night owls.
reruho39637.2599421296Spamula,
It isn't your fault that the meds aren't working, it is their growing bodies. You are a great Mom.
My son was on Vyvanse for a while too. He did good on it at first but then he got just like you described very hyper, bad attitude, did not listen to anything we said, argued about everything and would physically attack. He was increased when these things would happen, we went up to 50 or 75 mgs (I can't remember what dose we went up to) at first it would work and then after about a week or so he would go back to being Hyper, etc., Our pshyciatrist said that some kids cannot take the stimulants because they have this type of reaction or others to the medication. We are now on STrattera, while we are not at the target dose yet it seems better. There is still some resistance when told to do things, but he is not getting as angry or physically trying to fight with us. We have also started seeing a psychologist for behavior therapy that could be helping him out as well. I see improvement but we are not 100 percent on track yet.
My son lost 7 pounds while on Vyvanse. His appetite is also better on the strattera.
I doubt this will answer any of your questions, but know that you are not alone in what you are experiencing.
jAKE HAS BEEN AGGRESSIVE PRIOR TO THE VYVANCE AS WELL IT IS NOT NEW JUST OUT OF CHARACTER FOR HIM HE DOES NOT DO IT OFTEN. HE WAS HAVING A BAD DAY BECAUSE OF LACK OF SLEEP AND WAS IN A ROTTEN MOOD. HIS DAD WAS SUPERVISING AND THERE WAS A LARGE GROUP OF KIDS WHICH HE CAN'T HANDLE UNSTRUCTURED TIME WELL AND DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TALK HIM DOWN. I ONLY UPPED THE VYVANCE, NOT THE ZOLOFT YET BUT I THINK HE NEEDS IT. i WILL CALL THE DOC TODAY.Is this behaviour on the higher dose? If it is, then don't wait to call the doctor. Keep them in the loop so that they are aware and see if they agree with giving it a week Vyvanse might be wrong now.
I am not familiar with zoloft. Did you increase that too? Are you doing one or both increases at the same time? You might need to one increase a a time.
Call his doctor in the morning.
WELL I AM NOT REALLY SURE AS OVER THE WEEKEND HE TRIED TO STRANGLE A FRIEND AND MY HUSBAND, WHICH IS VERY OUT OF CHARACTER FOR JAKE. I AM GOING TO GIVE IT A WEEK OR SO THEN CALL THE PSYCH. I AM REALLY HOPING THIS WOULD DO THE TRICK.Thanks Reruho, I can only pray it goes so smoothly. I am very nervous about the change and we are going out of town in a couple of days. I find it hard to believe nobody else has gone up on Vyvanse. I am a nervous wreck.Well I give the higher dose this am he gets up soon. I am very nervous and scared. I am afraid it will be too high. oh well I have to try , the 30mgs wes not making it.Spamula,
How have things been going?

That is great news. My son is very hungry after the meds wear off too.
Well it has been a couple of weeks and he seems to be doing well on the increased Vyvance. it seems to be a smooth med with no rebound. I know when the meds are out of his system because he wants to eat. We also upped the zoloft at the same time and his mood seems to be better these days.
