Hi Everyone. It has been a while since my last post. To give you a little history, my daughter was diagnosed 3 years ago with adhd w/o hyperactivity. We tried adderall xr and focalin. Both produced terrible mood swings and changed her whole personality so we decided to come off meds and try to do it on our own. Her main problems are being able to pay attention, staying on task and organizational skills. We got thru this past year (5th grade) with A's and B's on her report card. Her teacher had to move her several times because of other kids talking and being a distraction and even had to put up manilla folders around her desk to help block out the distractions. Her teacher never mentioned "adhd" but each time I checked in with her teacher she said that she did fine while the teacher was up instructing the class but when it came to doing classwork on her own or taking a test, the teacher had to stay right with her and keep telling her to get back to work and alot of times stand next to her desk to make sure she kept on task to complete tests or classwork. Toward the end of the year her grades dropped some and the teacher told me it was because she was trying to 'ween' herself away my daughter to try to get her to do it on her own because when she goes to middle school the teachers won't do that and they would expect her to stay on task by herself. I totally understand that and know that it will be a faster paced environment, changing classes 6 times a day, being expect to keep up with homework, notebooks and etc., for each class.
Yesterday we went to her pediatrician for her 11 year check up and to discuss adhd once again. I asked him how he thought she would do with the transition from elementary to middle school without medicine considering the problems she had last year. Needless to say, after a long talk we have decided to try the Daytrana Patch. He said there is alot less "coming down" on this drug and has had great success with it.
Can anyone give me any advice, comments or this drug? Any advice from parents w/ same problems would be greatly appreciated.
my daughter did decently on Daytrana, she used it last year in middle school. For her it really killed her appetite, and she's already VERY thin, 5'2" 83 pounds, so we stopped using it to try Strattera fully intending on adding it back, but never did, she did well on the Strattera alone for several months, then when we opted to add back the stim she asked if she could take a pill. The nice thing about Daytrana is the flexibility of being able to remove it anytime. So weekends it could go on late and come off early. Please know it takes a VERY long time to "kick in", about 2 hours.there are several forum members who mix Vyvanse in liquid. Check out the Vyvanse threads, there are several. Our doctor recommended trying Focalin XR. We sprinkled it on some yogurt and gave it to him this morning for the first time. He didn't complain. We'll keep our fingers crossed and hope that we don't have to try to many medications before we find the right one.
[QUOTE=Diane V]For kids who can't swallow pills, Daytrana is a great choice.
Yes there are long acting meds that can sprinkled or mixed in liquid, Vyvanse can be mixed in liquid and Focalin and Adderall can both be sprinkled.

Please confirm this...Vyvanse can be mixed in a liquid. My doctor has suggested this medication for my son but told me that it has to be swallowed whole. I opted for Adderall to get him of of Ritalin/Daytrana patch.
thanks.
Vyvanse can be mixed in a liquid. Several meds can be opened and sprinkled on foods also. Concerta cannot be opened because of the solid type of pill, and Straterra should NEVER be opened. We're about to try stimulant medication for my son who is 5. He has an awful gag reflex and I know he won't be able to swallow a pill.
