buying special pencils | ADHD Information

I need to get Josh some triangle pencils, I was told that might help his writing problems. My problem is finding where to buy some. Can anyone give a suggestion where to get some?

I didn't get the pencils, but I got pencil grips, squishy plastic triangles that slip over regular pencils, at Staples.

I've tried those but josh is so funny that he does'nt want the other kids seeing he has helper things so i thought a triangle pencil wouldn't be so noticable.

Just a thought...

An OT in my infants classroom told me that pencil grips were not the best thing as they do move and the kids don't feel secure with them.  She suggested mechanical pencils with the grip already built in.  Not sure what you call them in the States.  Be careful to get a thicker lead as the thinner leads break easily and then need constant replacement.  The built in grip means that it stays up and the fingers are in the right position on the pencil.

Another good tip I got from her was having them place a small coin in their hand (the last two small fingers curl around thme)  when writing.  Not sure how to explain it.  I had a basket of those glass beads( often used in vases)  for the kids to get when they were handwriting.

Get your hands on the Abilitations catalogue.  Mine just came in the mail.  It is loaded witht tons of theraputic aids for all types of kids.  I'm ready to order chewy tubes (clear), a special sitting disk, a spandex body swing, plus some other items that will really help my son to self-regulate.  Some this things he has already used with his OT, other I just know will work for him.I know these are colored but I have not found regular.  If someone does I'd be interested too.  Wyatt plays with the grips and gets in trouble.

Thanks for posting this!  My non-ADHD DD is4 1/2  and still can't hold a pencil correctly, so she can't draw/write well.  I've tried breaking up her crayons into little bits, but she hates it.  Its starting to make her feel self conscience now, and it breaks my hearts.  I'm am totally hijacking these ideas!! thanks

twodoodles, my younger daughter (no ADHD diagnosed anyway) also has poor pencil drasp age 6. We broke all her crayons at 4 and she HATED it, but eventually started using them becasue there was no choice. Then she would ONLY use broken crayons, now she uses both. The small pieces really, really work, both my kids had terrible handwriting and poor too grasp. Work with her. She has come SUCH a long way from 5-6, but still not quite there.........we're continually working on it................

Just want to add, that poor muscle strength in the "trunk" is a BIG contributor to this. Some great activitees to guild a strong trunk

crabwalking, wheelbarrow walking, chin ups or pull ups, push ups, swimming, all these are fun AND help build core and trunk strendth, helps with fidgeting while sitting (somewhat) and fine motor delay.
