What can a neurologist do?

My 6 year old was dx ADHD, the combined type at the age of 5 1/2. We went to a an Autism/Psychiatry unit at a children's hospital. He saw a LCSW, then a ped. psychiatrist. After 2 visits, some observations, and Conners Eval. forms, he was dx.

I see some people recommend a neurologist. How can they help? If I made an appt., what kind of insight could they give? What would they do?

Any help is appreciated, I'm clueless. Thanks!

I'm not sure you need one for ADHD. If anything, if you want validation for your diagnosis, a neuropsychologist would be the place to go. Unless you feel there's a medical reason causing his symptoms (opposed to psychological). You're psychiatrist can manage your meds (and better than neuroplogist) for ADHD IMO. A pshciatrist who specializes in psychopharmocology is your most experienced with med management usually, but any psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD or whatever diagnosis your child has is a good fit.Thanks. That is pretty much what I figured. I think the psych is handleing thinigs well, but I thought a neurologist may be able to rule out other possibilities.they can if you're worried about other possibilities

They do indeed rule out other possibilities like certain medical conditions that might be causing the behaviors and it is always highly advised to rule out a medical condition first before accepting a diagnosis of ADHD. Many things, including a medical condition can look like ADHD and imo I think it is always wise to see a neurologist as well. You thought right
