Sleeplessness with Daytrana | ADHD Information
Ok, we're gonna try something new today.
I usually take the patch off at 3-3:30, so that gives the meds until about 6ish to wrap up...right? Well my 6yr old son stays wound up until after midnight every night, and we can't have that come school time....SO.....I'm going to leave the patch on for 12 hours and see what, how or if that help/effects him at all.
Yes, I do envision him up til the wee hours of morning, but giving it one shot won't take much out of us...umm..right?! LOL (fingers are crossed and my caffeine pills are ready and close by! LOL)
I absolutely hate the thought of him taking more meds to help with the side effects of other meds. UGH!
If any of you have had this problem and have other suggestions, or if you don't think leaving the patch on for 12 hours will have any effect, please let me know.
I am open to any and all suggestions/ideas
Yawwwn....ok, back to bed. He's still sleeping, so i should be too! lol
Have you thought about giving him Melatonin? That is natural and may help. I'm not sure about the dosage because I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure we will soon. There are many that post on this board about giving Melatonin. I'm JUST GUESSING that he would take 1mg to start with before bed. You can get it at GNC. Please check about the dose to make sure.
What would keeping the patch on for 12 hours do?
I wish you the best of luck. I know how hard this is because we're going through the same things. Hang in there!!
IMO leaving the patch on will make it worse. Melatonin is a natural sleep aid that works wonders. the earlier the patch comes off the better.
Leaving it on for 9 hours, or 12 hours will release the same amount of meds. The patch only releases a certain amount for 9 hours, and the meds continue to work for 3 more hours when it is removed. IMO leaving it longer may possibly make the sleeplessness worse.
If you are giving Melatonin, you should start with as low a dose as possible, .33mgs to begin.
We've been back and forth on dosages with Daytrana- slightly stronger
during school year, lower dose this summer-- DD eating more this summer
and enjoying it. Last winter our DD was experiencing sleeplessness. We
started taking patch off at 1:45 p.m. while at school. The 6:30 a.m. to
1:45 p.m. seemed to work best for us. Weekends it goes on later, say
8:30-9:30 but ussually comes off same time. She doesn't eat much during
day but more than makes up for it at night. She ussually get
pretty ugly from about 4:30 p.m. to about 6:00-- so called rebound
effect.
Don't know why leaving it on longer would help sleeplessness-- seems it
would make it worse since it would be getting full dosage availible
from a given patch. The higher dose for shorter time worked better for
us.
I heard a while back of a person putting patch on child at bedtime!
they claimed it worked great-- go figure.
good luck.
Thanks for the advise everyone....I really appreciate it. We're still working on the issue.
We're new to all this so I'm sure there will be lots of trials and errors...just hoping to find our groove sooner rather than later.
We leave the patch on ds for as long as is needed during the day. For ds,
once the patch is off, it is like there is no meds in him at all. We have to
keep it on until homework/activities are thru. We give him melatonin at
night to help get him to sleep. He has trouble getting to sleep whether or
not the patch is taken off early or not. His dr told us that keeping the patch
on longer than the recommended hours is fine and will not hurt him. Taking
it off at 3:30 did not help with afterschool activities or homework.Nathan definitely has a rebound....its complete chaos from 4:30 til about 8pm (we take the patch off at 3-3:30) Not quite sure what we're going to do about that when school starts next week.
On the up side, he is now starting to nod off around 10:30...still REALLY late (he needs to be in bed by 8:30)......but its better than 1am like we've been dealing with.
Still working on that groove....sigh...we'll get there.
