My son was on Strattera & he freeked out!! Told me his room was on fire,NOT! Started talking to the kid in his room.He doesn't share a room. He even started doing weird things with his face.Slept ALL day. Then he went to adderall combined with Zoloft, but now he's moved on to Concertta with a side of Risperdal. He's only 7yrs. old. I'm 35 and can't get no help for me. I don't sleep,I get migrains a lot, & my sons homework is too hard for me. My land, he's only in first grade. I feel so alone in my battle. Now I just have to tell people that my daughter has no problems at all, my son is ADHD and i'm just plain stupid! Sorry,but not many people support me. Heck, in middle school, we had to take what they called an Iowa test.I did pretty good,but I did bad in school. Conclution; they said I cheated. My dad told me I would never amount to anything in life because of my stupidity. He called that reverse psycology. Mom saye "Look to a dream to carry you through & someday it will come true." I always dreamed of having a nice husband, nice house, & great kids. I guess mom really does know best. I got all that now. I encourage my kids no matter what grade they get. I take after my mom.
Thanks for all the information. I'm guessing that its just muscle tension as I'm not getting any palpitations or anything. I'm seeing my doc tomorrow so I'll let you know what she says.Lee,
I have tried both Adderall and Ritalin in combination with the Straterra that I am taking. I have the same dull pain that you describe when I am taking either Adderall or Ritalin and had the same concerns as you. I notice the dull pain, but mine is actually more towards the center of my chest rather than right over my heart. I can exercise and I don't have any chest pain, so I am not too concerned about it.
From what I understand, the stimulants increase the dopamine which causes your heart to beat 'harder' and sometimes faster. This is what I think is causing my dull pain.
I should mention that I am also taking Atenolol for high blood pressure which regulates the heart rate to an extent so my heart never gets going really fast.
I am interested to see what others have to say about stimulants and dull chest pain.

I tend to get muscle tightness in my chest, but elsewhere also.
You could always make an appointment for a stress test and take your meds before you go so you are being tested about the time you usually feel the chest pains. That way you could be sure there is no problem.
wow! i had this exact same pain too! first on adderall xr right over my left breast area and now on ritalin 5 mgs right smack in the middle of my chest!
it does seem better today though however..maybe it will go away after you get use to it somemore.
you can ask the pharmacist about it being a side effect, they know more then the dr.s do i think.
I posted this in the meds forum but I wanted the opinion of other adults who use Ritalin.
I recently started on Ritalin and have had some strange side effects. As far as treating my ADD it has been a godsend. But when I take it I often get this dull ache over my heart. Sometimes I'll feel it in my back, directly behind where my heart is. The pain is not bad at all but its more of my paranoia about having chest pain.
I got freaked out one night and went to the ER cause I thought I was having a heart attack. The doctor took an EKG and said that my heart was completely healthy.
Am I being paranoid or could I be damaging my heart? Oh and also, this seems to happen at any dose.

I used to get chest pains (over my heart) when I was 15 or 16. The pain would be so severe it would take my breath away. Was admitted to the hospital for a while, but they found nothing. I was NOT an any meds at the time (unless my mother was slipping them to me in my milk).
Every so often I get the pain agiain. This year only 2 or 3 times.
I have pain that stabs or aches in my left side when I take the medication. Could be Prinzmetal's Angina or Coronary Syndrome X brought on by vasoconstricting properties of methylphenidate. After 17 years of Ritalin use, I believe that it has caused permanent, irreversible heart damage and this is the cause of the pain. Despite EKG, echo, stress echo and CAT, nothing unusual came up. Biopsy is next.

I have the same thing, and when I started my meds for the first time, I had horrible chest pains during the night... I started myself back on Prilosec OTC 2x day and most of the pain is gone. ( yep, and I burp like a sailor!! LOL)
I am thinking that, for me, that it is a combonation of anxiety, acid reflux, and getting used to the medication.
Funny thing, I had been very nervous for nearly 2 weeks before starting medication, when it kicked in -- the anxiety was gone, but the anxiety and butterflies in my stomach return after the medication wears off... kinda wierd, huh?

the evening just before bedtime.

That's a concern but the biggest difference I find in that study is that it did the drug by the injection route, not by oral route. It's well known that if you inject Ritalin, you will get a dangerous "high" and that doesn't give the body the time to adjust to changes. It can cause some permament damages as well. You'll much more likely to experience toxic effects even at recommended doses if you inject it.
When you take oral Ritalin, Ritalin is absorbed much slower and it gives your body some time to adjust to gradual physiological changes due to stimulant effects of Ritalin.
Also, I am curious if that effects are also observed in anxious patients since many patients report chest pains even tho they're "healthy" according to many lab tests.

Therefore, every time I drew a breath, it hurt like a mother (having childbirth~I was one in a former life~child, that is). 'Cuz I could'nt breathe well, my pale got all skinny, and my flesh was cool. Not to mention the chest pains.
