Medication Change | ADHD Information

MY SON HAS JUST STARTED ON VYVANSSE 50MG AND CLONDINE 0.1MG I AGREE ON FOLICAN XR HE WAS TAKING 40 MG IN AM AND HE WAS NOT SLEEPING AT NIGHT. HE HAD ANGRY MOOD SWING. I STILL THINK HE NEEDS A MOOD STABLIZER IN THE A.M

 

 

 

 

 

We were on Focalin XR 10 mg for 6 months and then went up to 20 mg because it was not lasting the entire day.

We did not realize how bad the side effects were until we took a 2 week "medication vacation". 

His side effects are:
loss of appetite
insomnia
moody
no energy

Spamula: At times I felt like it made him a zombie and my husband told me I was reading to much into it and he was fine. I have been telling him for several weeks I thought we needed to make a change. It took the medication vacation to remind my husband our son's true personality.  After 1 day back on the meds my husband said I think you are right and we need to change meds.  Did your son have any other similar side effects?

Yes we  had some of those side effects but the worse was the personality change and zombie like behaivior. The Vyvanse gave him his good old personality back and we had few side effects that lessend over time. Eating, sleeping such. We also give him Melatonin to sleep.That helped the situation and was approved by the psychiatrist that does his meds.

Has anyone ever changed meds from Focalin XR to Vyvanse?  If so did you have the same side effects?

After nine months of being on Focalin XR we are changing my sons meds due to the side effects. 

jaqcl39658.378275463what kind of side effects? My 5yr old ds is on focalin xr 15 mg. It really does not last 12 hours for us....We changed our son from Focalin xr to Vyvanse just this last year. It has made a huge difference especially the lack of side effect. Focalin made him a zombie he actually refused to take the Focalin it made him feel so wierd. The Vyvanse no complaints yet other than his food intake which has always been a problem. he is 10.We finished our first week and he does not seem to have the zombie like behavior but after taking it a couple of days he was irritable.  Is this a side effect that will go away?  I can't really tell how much it has effected his sleep since we don't have a set bedtime in the summer.  We start school next week so it will be the true test. 

Yesterday was our first day on Vyvanse and it was much like when we were on Focalin XR.  He didn't seem to be as irritable and angry but he did get teary a couple of times.  We'll see how the rest of the week goes.

i DID FIND THAT IT TOOK 2-3 WEEKS OF THE VYVANSE TO FULLY TAKE EFFECT AND THE SIDE EFFECTS TO GO AWAY. WE WAITED IT OUT AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE A GODSEND SO FAR. I WISH YOU LUCK.
