7 yr old started wetting bed | ADHD Information

Kim, I was just wondering if you ever got any answers from the doctor?  Keep us posted!

yah we went the dr on tues. we are now switched to vyvanse. so far no bed wetting this week. but it wasnt a daily thing before so we will just have to wait and see if it has stopped or not. the dr said he def doesnt look like he would have diabetes. no signs at all of it. he still does the sniffing but it hasnt been as many times since off of concerta. still watching and keeping track of everything to see what has changed. rebound is def not as severe. the only problem i have right now is that right when he takes the vyvanse he gets soooo hyper he cant sit still and he cant pay attention. its like he is distracted. this goes on for about an hour and a half and then he says he is tired and then he is really good the rest of the day. the first day he did not do this. but yesterday and today he did. i am hoping this will settle down by the end of the 1st week. we are really needing to find the right med and dose for school which is on the 18th. otherwise im worried about not being able to monitor him if he has to switch during school. i work weekend mornings and he will be in school m-f. lets hope this one works! oh and the eating and sleeping are still the same. not hungry and not tired. the dr thinks he is wetting the bed b/c he is staying up later. maybe sleeping really deep. she said she hasnt heard of kids wetting the bed specifically from meds. im not so sure. well if anything changes im sure i will be right back on here asking tons of questions. until then just wondering what to do about that 1 1/2 hours in the morning and if this has happened to anyone else taking vyvanse 30 mg. if we give it to him too early we are worried it will be wore off before school is out. it doesnt last the 10-12 is more like 6 hours.

Just an idea:  I Googled enuresis (bedwetting) and ADHD and came up with sites that look to have good information, excerpt from one as follows:

"ADHD does not cause enuresis (bedwetting) and it is not listed as a symptom of ADHD. However, there seems to be a higher incidence rate in children with ADHD of bedwetting. According to an article published in the Southern Medical Journal in 1997, children with ADHD had a 2.7 times higher incidence of enuresis and a 4.5 times higher incidence of daytime enuresis."

I have no other suggestions.  I think what you have done so far is good.  Good luck.

I don't know either. But, my son will be nine next month and we are still fighting the bed wetting. He dramatically improved in the last few months, but we still get accidents. My husband gets up during the night to go and he usually wakes up our son to make him go - that's what has solved it. I was told before by the doctor that it wasn't unusual for kids with his problems to be wetting the bed longer than other kids.

my son has had 3 accidents at night since he started taking concerta 2 months ago. i was wondering if anyone thinks or knows if this is a side effect of the meds or not. when i found out he had done it he was trying to hide it out of embarrassment so im ot exactly sure how many times this has happened. i explained to him that he is not in trouble but he needs to tell me when it happens so we can change his bed and clothes. so he has told me of 2 times since then. i asked him if he has done it before and he said sometimes at our old house which was a few months ago. but the times i remember were maybe like 1 or 2 times a yr. not 3 times in a month. im trying to make sure he goes to the bathroom a bunch before he goes to bed and limit his fluid after a certain time. i asked if he had nightmares and he says no. he just wakes up in the morning and his clothes are wet. anyone know if this is a side effect? maybe he is sleeping really deep with the meds and cant wake up to pee?? or overactive bladder? any suggestions of how to get the bed wetting to stop? thanks in advance!

I honestly haven't researched bedwetting and ADD/ADHD and/or the effects of any of the related medications, so I don't know if the meds could be a factor.  That being said, anytime I hear about a child starting to urinate noticably more frequent, or wetting the bed more regularly than usual, I feel obligated to mention diabetes.  I'm sure there are so many more explanations out there, but having a child with diabetes, I would hate to know I didn't throw the idea out there.

Brandon was 4-1/2, always wet the bed once or twice a month, but in the two weeks prior to dx, he started wetting the bed almost every night, sleeping in the afternoon, drinking a LOT of water, seemed to be hungry all the time, and got a little more cranky.  And looking back, he just seemed more pale looking and eyes looked more sunken in.

SO...  if you notice that he seems to maybe be losing weight, even a little, drinking more, peeing more, can't seem to get enough to eat, more tired than usual, or breath smells like nail polish remover, please get him to the pediatrician/doctor immediately.  Go directly to the ER if he has the breath smell, and/or falls asleep and you can't seem to wake him up.  Even better, if you have access to a glucose meter, you can check his blood sugar first thing in the morning.  It shouldn't be over 100-110.

There, I feel better about letting you know about that and I hope you can find out something soon.

he peed the bed last night too. now this is 4 times. the thing that worries me is that it has seemed to just start. if it had been going on since he was potty trained then it wouldnt bother me so much. but its almost like it started when we started the meds. he did it once on 18mg and now 3 times on 27mg. for all i know maybe its just a coincidence but its really upsetting me. im going to talk to his dr on tuesday about it. i have been hearing good things about vyvanse on this board and im thinking we might try that and see if the bedwetting and some of the other side effects go away. i really appreciate all the info u have shared with me. it makes me feel so much better that my son is not the only one out there going through this. i get up a few times at night to pee b/c im preg so maybe i will wake him up. i swear last night he barely drank a thing and went to the bathroom so many times before bed that it really suprised me this morning. thanks again!!

kim

thank u everyone for your help. i will let u all know what the dr says tomorow. we go at 330 so i should be back shortly after that. i really appreciate all of the help and suggestions.

thank u so much for throwing that out there. a few ppl have asked me if i have had his blood sugar checked and then it slipped my mind again. im going to ask the dr at his appt on tues if they can get his level checked. it just seems like he has to pee all the time! i thought maybe when we were out it was just some weird thing that he had to use the bathroom when he saw one or a door that he thought was one. sometimes he would see an employee only door and instantly say he had to use the bathroom. it doesnt seem like he uses it alot at home in the day but at night he says he has to go constantly. and now i beleive him more that he really has to go and not just trying to get out of bed. although i still let him use it whether he was trying to trick me or not b/c the truth is u just never know. him peeing the bed has really disturbed me. i have always associated bed wetting with something stressing out a child. esp when they just do it all the sudden. but again he isnt having nightmares and doesnt seem to have any troubles or any drastic changes. we had moved but it was back in march that we came here. he doesnt seem pale or very tired and i havent noticed his breath. the peeing alone is enough for me to get him tested though. maybe he is even borderline or something. it would be nice if we could rule it out. thats gotta be dangerous to not have insulin if he was diabetic. so again i thank u very much!! that had slipped my mind and i would have never remembered in time for his appt!

I'd say talk to the doctor.

My son didn't wet the bed, but he did have accidents during the day.  He was distracted by the ADHD and didn't "remember" to go to the bathroom during the day.  The doctor thought he had stretched his bladder, and it sort of numbed the "got to go" feeling.  We reminded him to go every two hours by the clock, and he started getting that feeling back.  Now it's very infrequently that he has accidents; it's more or less stopped.  If you reminded him to go more often during the day, even though that doesn't seem to be the problem, you might help him "wake up" numbed feelings, and it might help him wake up in the night when he needs to.  Just a thought.

yes the sniffing is a tic. Sounds like you have a few things going on, I'm glad you're seeing the doctor. Keep us posted.

If you get this before his appointment, and really want him checked out, make sure they draw his blood, or take a finger stick.  It is not enough to just check the urine for sugar/ketones.

Good Luck!

thanks diane and twicker!!! i have anxiety and he doesnt seem anxious to me but maybe he could be holding it in? i will try to find out if he is anxious. any ideas for asking a child? or other signs of it? i am about 15 weeks preg. but i find out at 4 weeks so i told him a little over 2 months ago. he is actually very excited about it. he has a little brother that is 2 1/2 and he really wants a baby sister. he doesnt really say much about the baby though unless we are talking about it or asking him a question about how he feels about it. also he weighs 46 lbs on 7/2 the last we went to the dr. he is 4' 2" and he will be 7 yrs old sept 25th. he is very skinny. he always has been. he was a 9 lbs baby but wasnt ever fat just big. im really hoping that he has gained a little weight since our last appt. and yes your right we do go to the dr on tuesday. im actually wanting him to switch to vyvanse. just in case bedwetting is from concerta. we also think he may have tics. is this one: he sniffs all the time like he has a runny nose, but only he doesnt have one. he does it really hard where he closes his eyes. like hes trying to sniff a golf ball through his nose. he does it atleast a hundred times during the day whether anyone is paying attention to him or not. not sure if its a tic or not. some one told me it could be from the aircondtioner?? well anyhow thanks for helping me ladies! im wondering what the dr will make of all of this.

kim

thank u! yah i was thinking they would want me to come in to draw blood. i was going to be tested before and they wanted me to come in before i had anything to eat. is this what they do for the kids too? come in before he has eaten anything? thank so much for your help. is this the age that kids usually get dx for this? or can it strike anytime? i dont know alot about diabetes.

I want to mention one more thing. Anxiety........my 6 year old has a good friend who started wetting the bad last year a couple of months into the school year. Their teacher last year was VERY structured and really kept a thumb on them behaviorally (which was a blessing for us ), and this girl didnt do well in that environment, she was wetting the bed. Her Mom got her classroom changed and she stopped.

ADHD meds can occasionally exacerbate anxiety. So just another thing to throw out there and keep in the back of your mind...............

Diabetes can be diagnosed at any age.  There isn't really a "typical" age when it is found.  They can draw his blood or do a finger stick at any time to get a random sample.  If someone is suspected of having Type I diabetes, a random sample, especially after eating within an hour or two, can tell a lot more than a fasting blood sugar.  A fasting blood glucose (BG) shouldn't be over 100-110.  A one or two hour post meal number over 140 is indicitive of diabetes.  A lot of children when they are diagnosed could have a BG anywhere between 200-1100.  Brandon had eaten a kid's meal just before his doctor appointment, and by the time he had his BG checked it was about 1-1/2 hours after he had finished eating.  His BG was over 800.

Again, if you son were to start throwing up, can't be easily aroused, or has odd smelling breath (believe me, it will smell like nail polish remover), do not pass go, do not collect 0, GO TO THE ER!  I don't mean to make you anxious or anything, just passing along information.  In all actuality, he probably doesn't have diabetes, but worth ruling it out.

Does he have an appointment coming up? Nevermind, I see that you are going on Tuesday.

Someone else mentioned anxiety, and I noticed that you said you were pregnant.  Is he an only child/youngest child? How far along are you?  Did you just recently find out, or are you close to the end?  Maybe a new baby could be stressful on him, especially since you said you just moved recently.

Also, I know I've bombarded you with diabetes info, but I never asked about his weight.  Is he on the thin side?

My son also had alot of problems with bed wetting from the time he was a toddler until he was 12. I tried everything I could think of outside of meds. He had just about every drug know to man kind for ADHD, so I'm not really sure that a specific kind of med causes bed wetting. However, I did take him to a urilogist and he prescribed DSVP which is a form of vasopressin. It is a hormone that the body uses to help control fluid volume levels. In most people the brain controlls the hormone level and when need it will causes the kidneys to either absorb urine or produce more. Boys seem to have a harder time with bladder control. Is it a physical problem or an emotionally issue? I'm not really sure! However, my son took this pill 1 a day for a month and cut off his fluid intake after 5pm and this stop the bed wetting. So, to make a long story short, have you seen a urilogist yet? You may need a referral from the pediatrician. Some kids will start bed wetting when there is a change in the home environment. It can be anything as small as a new pet to a new family member, new child or a parent with a new job.  Anyway, good luck and remember our kids are special gifts from God. They are different, but not in a bad way! When you feel that you have lost every little bit of sanity you have left, remember you are not alone! I can personally say, I've been there too!
