11 yr old suddenly super paranoid?? | ADHD Information

I was going to say anxiety also. My daughter has also been on most ADHD meds and most increase her anxiety dramatically! Currently she's taking Strattera and a low dose of Methylin ER (generic long acting methylphedinate) and doing well.My 8 yr old son had problems with paranoia on some drugs. One in particular caused him to think that all photos and stuffed animals were watching him. He started saying "How come I never noticed this before? Everything is staring at me!" He had other problems with the medication and we took him off that.

However, now he is on 5mg of Prozac for anxiety and he's been on it for about 6 months now. He started two days ago with things staring at him and that eyes in certain photos look like they are following him. He insists it's true and it doesn't seem to worry me as much as it did last time. I just pray we aren't dealing with some other issues besides his ADHD/OCD/Anxiety.

I think it is interesting that the last poster mentioned it sometimes is caused by sleep deprivation or bullying - those are certainly options.

We have had periods of paranoia - causes have included

- medication - some have developed immediately while others have taken weeks

- Sleep deprivation - this was a big one - he now takes a relaxant to go to sleep.  The less sleep the worse he got.

-bullying - the whole world is against him  His focus is on watching everyone and everything when in reality is only a few kids whole are targeting him.

Good luck with your investigations

My 11 year old son has been on just about every ADHD medication over the last 6 years.  Finally, we found Daytrana about 6 weeks ago and he's been taking 30 mg and doing really well on it.  Just this week, he's starting acting crazy paranoid. He's constantly afraid that someone is going to pop out of a corner in the house and attack him.  It's really bad.

He's done well on Ritalin-type drugs before but because he metabolized them so quickly, he had to take several pills a day and then he lost a lot of weight and we quit because of the side affects.  Do you think it's possible that he actually needs a small dose (10 mg) now that it's being absorbed differently?

I'm so discouraged because I felt like we'd finally found something that worked and we got around the fast metabolism problem, and now the paranoia.  Help?

Thanks.

Hi, roark23.  Did you talk to his doctor yet?  Anything else going on in his life that might be causing the behavior?

My DS has had trouble with stims (methylphenidate, in particular), so I understand that finding the right med is a trial and error process.

Hopefully, the prescribing physician can help you soon.  Keep us posted and good luck.
