JON again | ADHD Information

Hi y'all. Jon went to Miami again yesterday for his med review. This time they wrote prescriptions for two months. The psychiatrist up here said she would take Jon BUT he had to have lab work, see a pediatric gastroenterologist, and get an ECG (same as EKG). We will know the results of the lab work in a few days.

We had the ECG done this morning: Sinus arrhythmia, Possible left atrial enlargement, left ventricular hypertrophy.

A pediatric cardiologist will review the results and Jon will probably have to see him.

I can't believe it. Not great news at all. My husband said I need to refuse to accept it. I am not sure what he is talking about but I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS DX FOR MY JON. Please all of you, keep him in your prayers- he has been through so much these last few months.

Hi Randy!  You know I'm praying for you and your little Jon...I don't really  know what this dx means, so I'll look it up. Second opinions never hurt...I know you know that.

Sending up a prayer for Jon right now!

Hi Randy, I know how much you have been through with Jon and I want you to know that my prayers are with him and you right now.

I can tell you that I took my son to a pediatric cardiologist a couple of months ago and he has a sinus arrythmia and he assured me that  is normal for all children. I also know that they need to have ekg machine set for pediatric reading and definately have a pediatric cardiologist read it. I know it is hard but hang in there.

Why see pediatric gastroenterologist?

i AM SORRY FOR THE NEWS. AT LEAST YOU HAVE A GOOD TEAM WORKING ON HIM TO MAKE HIM BETTER. ALL MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOU.I am thinking of you and will definatley say an extra prayer for all of you!

Thanks again. I tried the grapefruit with his meds this morning and nothing happened. It did not extend the time. So I don't know what did the other day. If I did, I could be a millionaire!

My friend wants to give Jon his own little puppy but right now my husband says no more dogs (we have three). Every dog that was Jon's had to go to a different home for one reason or another. Jon is anxious to get baby Emma. She is going to be very tiny so he would be supervised with her if we got her. I am trying to give him a little more freedom with playing outside. it is difficult because his moods can change so quickly.

Today Jon's meds lasted a very long time. We gave him his 15mg Focalin XR at 7am. Usually they would be gone by noon at the latest. Today, he ate 1/2 a grapefruit for breakfast and I wonder if it had an effect on his meds. Does anyone know about this? I know this should be in the meds section but I am not too familiar with that section.

We find out tomorrow (I hope) about Jon's heart from the pediatric cardiologist. We were told by the doctors that the medications for adhd can cause this.

Do they have any idea what caused this for him. I will pray for his recovery. take care

Got the results from Jon's pediatric cardiologist. Jon's heart is fine!!!!! Also, spoke to his doctors about his focalin XR and grapefruit and they got back to me and said there is no problem combining the two. There should be no effect. I am speaking to the pharmacist later on for another opinion.

Jon is not having a great day. It is so hard to be consistent with discipline when a child who has been so ill acts out. I told Jon that his behavior is not excused by his adhd and will be dealt with immediately! he has pretty much spent most of the day in his room. After several hours he asked me to forgive him and is now allowed out but he wants to stay in there until he feels he can act better

Grapefruit is the worst thing anyone can consume while taking ADHD medication.  Grapefruit juice is a problem for people taking certain drugs - including many psychotropic meds.  Grapefruit juice (unlike any other citrus juice) inhibits two enzymes that are important in metabolizing, or breaking down, these medications. When the enzymes aren't doing their job, much more of the drug in question remains available to enter the patient's bloodstream. For clarification on this ask your pharmacist

As far as medications causing heart problems, if the person has a pre existing heart problem or heart defect the patient is advised not to take ADHD medication because the medication can exacerbate an already pre existing heart problem. This is why its very important for the child to see a cardiologist before going on ADHD meds. Sometimes a person can be born with a congenital heart defect and not know it. Good luck and please keep us posted. I will be praying that you get some encouraging news about your precious little Jon.

Lovemykids02- thank you for your knowledge and encouragement. OK- please don't think I am being weird- but- since Jon's medications were wearing off so quickly and if grapefruit juice makes them last longer- is that a bad thing? We didn't even have to give Jon his afternoon 5mg of focalin. I am going to speak to several of his doctors tomorrow anyway, so I will ask them about the grapefruit juice.

I am so happy Jon is asleep. Last month, when he complained about his chest hurting I thought it was his lungs so I took him to the doctor and she said it was. I wonder if it could have been his heart but I will hopefully find out tomorrow.

Randy

WHAt wonderful news about Jon You must be so relieved. I am so happy for you guys

About the grapefruit juice, I have to disagree with the doctors but this is not their expertise anyway. Good idea to check with your pharmacist but this is well known in the medical community so Im a bit surprised. I took this paragraph from WEBMD website. Again, great news!

Here are some tips to minimize side effects and maximize the beneficial effects of stimulant medications:

Medications shouldn't be taken with anything acidic, such as orange juice, grapefruit juice, or vitamin C, as they can decrease absorption. Take a multivitamin in the afternoon or evening, instead of the morning. Make sure that to eat a nutritious meal prior to taking the medication. This should help with headache and upset stomach.
