i just switched my son 7 yrs old from concerta 27 mg to vyvanse 30 mg. yesterday he was soooo good. i got my hopes back up. then this morning it took over an hour for the med to start working. he was just bouncing off the walls. did this happen to anyone else? does it take a little while to start working? also my dr said that its a med that tells your body to make the chemical or hormone and that it starts working better over time like in 2 weeks or so. said its different than the other meds that just give your body the chemical. i didnt see any of this while looking up info on it so i just wondered if its true. im really hoping this one works b/c he starts school in 2 weeks and then it will be harder to moniter him if we have to try a different med. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! oh and also it seems to wear off about 6 hours later. is this also typical?

well, i am 23 and just started taking vyvanse about 2.5 weeks ago or so. i started with 30mg and have moved up to 50mg now. it takes about an hour or so for it to kick in because of the exact reason the doctor explained to you. your body has to respond to the medication. i notice my dose wears off after 7-8 hours. he might need a higher dose, but i would suggest giving him his medication about an hour or so before he wakes up. this way when he gets out of bed, his body has already had time to react.
just out of curiosity, why did you switch from concerta?
hope this helped!
i saw u said in your other post that its like u had a jolt of energy or something? well for him its like he cant sit still can concentrate or focus ita almost like he has had 4 cups of coffee. he is very distracted. it has lasted about hour and a half the last 2 days and then he is tired and then he is normal. this med seems to work really good except for in the morning. we had to switch from concerta b/c he stays up pretty late and he wasnt hungry. he lost a few lbs and is already very skinny to start with. it started to wear off earlier than a few weeks ago and had rebound out of this world. also i think he had a tic from it. he sniffs really hard where he will scrunch up his whole face and he doesn it atleat 100 times through the day. also he started wetting the bed the last 2 months when he started 18 mg. he did it once with 18 and like 5 times since 27mg. im not sure if concerta caused the wetting the bed but with the other things going on we decided to switch. but i have heard concerta works good. thats why we started with it. maybe it will work good for u? everyone is different. for exampe alot of ppl like adderall and take that but when i gave it to my son it didnt do anything. it was like he didnt take anything. i hope u find the right med and thanks for the info on the vyvanse. did it make u feel really hyper right when u took it?? did it go away after a week or 2? oh yah and he doesnt get all wired until he takes it. he is usually pretty calm in the morning.

rosalie6839668.646412037Hey Kim,
After an hour or so of taking it I feel very jittery....exactly like you said your son reacted... like 4 cups of coffee! It wears off as the day goes on though.
As far as it changing after a few weeks, I haven't noticed any difference. Same reaction every day.
Hope it works for you guys!
yesterday and today he hasnt had the craziness in the morning. hopefully he wsa just getting used to it. does anyone know if there is a 20 mg pill?? he is soooo quiet and he doesnt seem to smile too much. hopefully he will not be like this all of the time. this med does work really good though. just want an in between of crazy hyper and super quiet. spamula how long were u using 30 before having to move him up to 50?? so far my sons meds have started to wear off or not work as good around 3 weeks. that was with concerta though. was he able to be on it for quite a while? thanks

MY SON HAD BEEN ON THE 30MG WHICH I CUT IN HALF THE FIRST WEEK. HE HAS BEEN THERE FOR ALMOST 1 YEAR AND IS PROBABLY STARTING PUBERTY.WE JUST UPPED IT TO 50MG.My son started Vyvanse last month. It definately takes up to an hour to start working - and sometimes that is the longest hour of my life. We are getting at least 8 hours of coverage, sometimes more. It has definately been better for us than the Concerta.WE JUST MADE THE JUMP FROM 30MG TO 50 MG AND IT DOES TAKE ABOUT 1/2 TO 1 HOUR TO KICK IN. WE GIVE IT BY 6:30AM SO HE WILL EAT DINNER AT AT A REASONABLE HOUR. HE GETS A FULL 12 HOURS FROM VYVANSE AND SO FAR IT HAS BEEN GREAT FOR HIM.thank u for your responses. i love this website! school starts on monday so thats the ultimate test of how this med works. he isnt crazy hyper in the morning anymore. i think he was just getting adjusted to it. he does seem to be in a daze sometimes or confused. like he is daydreaming or not paying attention but his impusivity and hyperness are soooo much better!!! i really hope everything evens out and he gets his appetite back and can go to sleep at a decent time. but so far this is way better than our experience with concerta. thank u for all your help!!

Will is back on this from Concerta and it literally takes 1.5 hours to kick in.. He's fine at school, I THINK but the mornings are terrible.
Will always acts a little mopey the first few days of taking a new med. Hope that helps..
WILLSMAMA- YOU DECIDED TO GO BACK TO THE VYVANSE WHY? THOUGHT YOU WEREN'T THRILLED ABOUT IT. WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND? DS IS STILL DOING WELL ON HIS AND WE DID NOT TAKE A MED BREAK ALTHOUGH HE NEEDS ONE WEIGHT WISE.HE IS BOUNCING OFF WALLS AND EVERYTHING ELSE IF NOT MEDICATED. HE ALSO WON'T BE QUIET. THE VYVANSE IS GREAT FOR US SO FAR BESIDES EATING, I HOPE YOU FIND SUCCSESS.Hi Spamula!
Yes, we started back on it a few weeks ago. Concerta just didn't do ANYTHING for him at all and I wanted something that would last throughout the schoolday. They started back last week.
The reason we stopped it was because I felt like it was causing some anger issues. Things were just horrible at home and I didn't want to be around him. We got off it and started Depakote. One or the other helped and the anger issues are 90% gone. We're still on the Depakote and now take Vyvanse 70mg.
The thing I do like about Vyvanse is we have no rebound at all with it. It's VERY slow to get in his system (WAY too slow) and it's slow to get out.
He's in 3rd grade now, different schedules, different school, and teachers that he doesn't already know. (we live in a small town). We have homework every night now, which is something very new to us and I must say he's doing well. I don't know how he's doing gradewise, but I should know soon.
I'm not sure about behavior either but he's been in school for 10 days and so far, no phone calls.
Things are pretty good at home now and as long as the anger doesn't come back, I'm satisfied..
I understand the eating issues. Last Sunday I swear the child didn't eat enough for one meal ALL DAY LONG. He weighs 47 pounds and is 47 inches long. Seeing him with other 3rd graders, he looks like he's in 1st and he's the oldest in his class.
Thanks for asking about him!
