Weening off meds

My son has been taking Zyprexa for about 2 months, before that Stattara.  He was diagnosed with ADHD/mild Autism.  His family doctor is taking him off of Zyprexa, (weening).  I was told by her that you are not to stop this drug cold turkey.  He had taking it earlier this year and was taking off of it because of weight gain.  Put back on it for fits.  I have been doing alot of research regarding this drug and it really is not recomended for children.  He's only 6.  We had tried two stimulants in the past with one wearing off in 1 1/2 hours and the other (Adderll) making him feel like he was going to fast and him at age 4 throwing tanturms after taking it.  I wish the Behavioral doctor would have told me more about this drug and now she's leaving and refering all her patiants to another doctor who does not take our insurance.  Now I found another Behavioral Clinic in another city but that will take a month or better just for them to see him and another 1 to 2 months before a specialist will see him for meds.  After he stops taking the Zyprexa all he will be taking is Clonidine.  Today he had a meltdown and slapped my arm and kicked the sit of our car.  My husband just drove around until he calmed down.  I still have bruises on my arm where he bit me.  I think this medicine caused him to do this so I hope we can get him off of it fast.  He starts school in 2 days.  Well who ever reads this thanks for listening.

is there any way that u can get a referral to the other clinic from your old dr?? that would get u in faster. otherwise if not i would make the apps now so u arent waiting any longer than that. u can also ask to be on a cancelation list so that if anyone is to cancel there appt they will call u to come in.  my son is on vyvanse right now and that seems to be working good so far. maybe u can try some other stimulants? all of them work differently for everyone. maybe the 2 u had werent the right ones?? this is our 4th try. im sorry u are going through all of this. i dont know anything about zyprexa but i know weaning off of any med can make u feel like crap. maybe that why he has been crabby lately for u. i think they say most meds will be out of your system in about 2 weeks. but again dont know much about zyprexa. is it an antidepressant? i just wanted to wish u luck and i hope u can get him in soon. try to hang in there until then.

The Zyprexa is for bipolor and schophrinia (don't know the spelling on that one.  He is not either.  I did ask the clinic if I can make an appointment friday but she said that someone will look over his case and give me a call to make an appointment.  I even asked my doctor about Vyvanse and she does not give those type of medicine out without a specialist.  Only Strattara.  So right now is a waiting game.  If it wasn't for the referal for the clinic in Indy I would change doctors.  MY SON IS ALSO ON vYVANSE AND IS WORKING WELL WITH HIM FOR 1 YEAR NOW. i WISH YOU LUCK. I COULDN'T TAKE ZYPREXA IT FREAKED ME OUT! GOOD LUCK WITH ALL THAT IS GOING ON.

i think that u should try to find a dr that will let u try different meds. not just give u 3 of them to choose from. thats not fair. we have a university by our house. university of iowa and thats where my son goes. they have lots of different types of drs there. he was seem by a nueropsychologist. it think your son needs to be seen by one. they can help u out alot. if your son doesnt have neither one of those things then what are they using zyprexa for? i know sometimes drs use it for different things other than what its meant for but i am just curious. im very sorry that u are having all this trouble finding help for your son. i hope that u find some help soon!

The doctor at the behavioral center that my son was going to gave him Zyprexa for ADHD since he didn't do so well on Ritilin and Adderall.  He was on Risperdal in the past and after a year on that medicine he got aggressive.  No one ever wanted to do an exam on his head to see what was going on.  He just now got some blood work done by his family doctor.  When I do get into seeing someone from this other clinic for him I'm going to ask if they can do a mercury test and food allergy test.  Also, a PET scan.  All these doctors want to do is get their prescription pad out and start writing and I'm just sick of it.  I want answers not more medicine that will make him crazy.  He is off of the Zyprexa now, his doctor took him off after a week of tapering him off.  Hope that was enough time.  I just called my son's insurance and changed his doctor to here in town.  He had him before, they do prescribe medicine without going to see a specialist.  We know what he has now I'm going to let this new doctor take care of it.  I go to this doctor myself and I trust him.  Why give the specialist money to experiment on my child.  I just have to hang in there for 30 days while the change takes effect.  This is the 3 day of school hope he did good.
