Because we open the pill and put it in soda, he drinks it I see about 1 hour untill it takes effect. That is the time I have to feed him and get him ready for school. By schooltime he is fine. We give it by 6 am everyday. he gets a good 11-12 hours with no rebound.

my son is on the 30 mg and it seemed to take an hour and a half for it to work for about the 1st week or so. he was very hyper and ran around non stop and then as soon as it had been 1 1/2 hours he would sit down. now he doesnt do that so im guessing maybe it works sooner for him now?? my dr said that it works better over time like maybe 2 weeks later b/c this pill makes your body produce the hormone it needs instead of a med that has what they need inside. i dont know if that makes sense?? but maybe after 2 weeks her body will produce the chemical or hormone it needs faster? i also wasnt sure about the different mgs. i had only heard of 30 50 70. but saw that some ppl have used 20. im glad pp cleared that up. thank u! now if we have to go up i will prob try the 40 mg first. so i would wait 2 weeks b4 u up the dose and see if its working better.

I had a question about Vvanyse.  I son took Adderall in the past and caused him to think his body was moving to fast.  Vvanyse is made by the makers of Adderall does this drug have the same effect.  I'm going to ask my doctor about Vvanyse since alot of people say it works really well.  Ok, I have looked over the entire forum and have not found the answer to my questions.  My dd (8) has been taking 30 mg. of Vyvanse for 9 months.  It worked so well, it was like I had another child.  Recently I noticed she has had ups and downs in her day and was having tantrums quite frequently so I called the Dr. and asked if she maybe needed an increase in her meds.  He put her on 40mg.  It seems to take about 2 hours to kick in, then she is fine.  I can't seem to remember how long it takes for the medication to become adjusted in her system. So one of my questions is...how long should I wait and observe before I call the dr to possibly increase her meds to 50 mg.  Second, should it take 2 hours to kick in? When she was on the 30 mg, it seemed to work in about half an hour, but we just started giving her the 40 mg yesterday so I am wondering if the 2 hours will lessen in a week or so.  Finally, I have noticed on this board that lots of people are giving 50mg, but not a lot are giving 40mg...is there areason that 40mg isn't used as frequently or is it just coincidence?

We love the Vyvanse and I would hate to take her off of it so I am hoping that an incerae in meds will help (I wasn't really sure how often the meds needed to be increased).  She will be starting 3rd grade in a few days and I am hoping the meds will kick into full gear by then.
That is one of the downsides to Vyvanse is that it does take longer to notice the effects.  Normally it takes closer to an hour to notice it working.  One thing my doctor told me was to try taking it before you are ready to get out of bed.  This might be harder for a young child but I set my alarm for 1/2 before I am going to get up and have the meds at the bedside.  I take the med and then hit snooze and sleep for a little while longer.

The reason most people refer to 30mg, 50 mg and 70 mg doses is because Shire just started making 20mg, 40mg and 60mg doses.

Takes a good hour - maybe a bit longer here for effects to be seen from taking the Vyvanse.  Getting my son to take it and go back to sleep is impossible here - so I just make sure I get him up at least an hour before we have to be anywhere and he takes the meds first thing.  Makes the hour getting ready before school hellish for me - but it is working by the time we go to school.

We haven't done an increase so I am not sure how that effects how long it takes the meds to start working.

I was prescribed Vyvanse for a trial instead of my normal 30 mg two times a day prescription of Adderall.  Personally, I didn't like it because of the longer effects you described with it being a pro-drug and all.  Being a college student and having 8 or 9 am classes, I would typically set my alarm to like 630 or 730 and take my first 30 mg tablet and then would just snooze till about 30-40 minutes later, until I could get that feeling that makes you say "what am I doing in bed, I need to get moving!"  Trying that with Vyvanse, I found I would just go back to sleep and wake up like two hours later missing my first class which sucked... when it finally did get working though it was very similiar to adderall, in terms of the mental focus and being driven and I did like that the unpleasant side effects such as hyper-anxiety, uncontrollable sweats, random high pulses, and of course the dreaded crash in the early evening were greatly reduced... but... I needed my stimulant kick in the ass in the morning so I had to get back on it.  For children though I think it's great since as a parent you force them to wake up and get moving, and by the end of their first hour or the middle of their second they should be alert and focused.  Oh, and concerning the dosages I remember being prescribed the 50 mg tablets, and I was told to take one once per day...  of course I experimented with the dosages 50 mg was ok... but slightly mellow and unpronounced.  100 mg was closer to the feeling I got from an above 30 mg dose of adderall, but as you read in the literature once you reach a certain point, higher dosages don't really have an effect... so 150 mg felt the exact same as the 100 mg... hope some of this was helpful.

thanks for all the suggestions.  I decided to request he stay on his current meds.  He is not having any bad side effects and it is working just fine.  Why wreck a good thing???

I just had my son prescribed Vyvanse 20 mg and am really terrified to have him make a change.  He has been taking short acting Ritalin and it has been working fine during the time he is on it (asside from the nightly rebounding and hyper mornings before it kicks in).  He had a bad reaction to Adderall years ago, and I am so worried he won't take well to this change.  I just wanted him to change to a longer acting medicine to avoid the rebounding and now am facing him starting a brand new drug.  How similar is Vyvanse compared to Ritalin?

I thought it was better to just have him take Long Acting Ritalin.

Worried....

i just wanted to say that my son was given adderall a few yrs ago. he also did not react well to it. it upset me so bad that i didnt turn back to meds until now a few yrs later and didnt want him on adderall. ritalin worked ok so they put him on concerta, that wasnt doing as much as it should so we did try adderall and guess what? it wsa like he had water!! did not do a thing. so weird compared to how he was last time. so maybe if yours had aderall right now u would see a differnt reaction. my son is on vyvanse now and he is doing very well. it did take him a few days to get used to it. so try it and see if it works. ours does last 10-12 hours with hardly any rebound. some days we dont have rebound at all. i too get worried and nervous to try different meds b/c in all reality we just dont know how they will react. GL to u!

Well I'm not a pharmacist, but have tried all those medications... Concerta, Ritalin, Metadate, Adderall, and Vyvanse.  Methylphenidate is considered to be a little less strong and generally more mellow than it's amphetamine relatives.  Vyvanse is more similar to long acting ritalin than adderall xr per say... at the dosage you describe of 20 mg you definitely do not have to worry about your child having much of an adverse reaction... it would probably hardly even be noticed.  Shire touts that Vyvanse is now it's flagship product because of the reduced side effects and low abuse potential since it's not water soluble and therefore can not be insufflated and such.  Since this is a new medication doctors are trying to get this prescribed to anyone they can so they can get there own feel for how patients react to it.  This was the case with my doctor, it was like she was so excited about this new product and giving me all the pamphlets and the CD that came with it, but I told her I didn't like it and she got me right back on the adderall.  No big deal.. just humor them.
