| Any one else have child on Focalin XR? | |||
| |
My son was just diagnosed with Focalin XR. He seems to be doing well on it but it appears that it is wearing off within 6 hours and not getting him through the school day. I have heard that some doctors do the regular focalin as a boost. I would love to hear from other parents whose children use it. Hi, My 6 year old son just started taking Focalin XR 5 mg last Friday. He had been taking Metadate CD 10mg for a year, but it wasn't working at all the past few months. Anyway, he seemed very, very calm and quiet for the first few days but I think it's because he has terrible allergies and wasn't feeling well. He was even going to bed well. The past two days he seems more himself, calm, but not zombie-like. He did have a hard time falling asleep last night (close to 11pm). He doesn't start first grade until next Wed., so we'll see how he does in school. I find it lasting a good 8 hours like the doctor said. The Medtadate was only lasting a few hours with a lot of crying spells all day. So this seems like a good change so far. Kathy My son (10) has been on Focalin XR 20mg for over 1.5 years now. We had a lot of trouble with rebound initially and the doc prescribed the short- acting focalin to help with that. We still use it "as needed" for after school activities or nights with lots of homework. The XR usually wears off after about 8 hours for him, so most nights it's not a problem. My 9 year old son has been taking Focalin XR 15mg for about 4 years. It doesn't last as long as other "long acting" medicines, but there is no zombie child. He is just a calmer version of my precious kid. After about 6 hours his attention span is shorter but I still see a calmer child than usual. We don't have any sleep issue with it, but we do have some increased anxiety. Last year, I gave it to him right before we walked out the door to go to school. I also make sure he has a high protein/low sugar breakfast. I find this helps it last a little longer. My son (9yo, and a host of other issues in addition to ADHD) is on Focalin XR. He started it in May and the 5mg really worked well for about 3weeks and we then upped it to 10mg because he was OUT OF CONTROL.Our doctor's belief was that because my son had other issues, that we wanted to try a smaller dose. Since it worked intially, it was a good med for our son but because of his size (nearly 100lbs and 4'6") the 10mg was the right dosage. I'm now finding (after being on this dose for about 2months now) that around 2-3pm he gets REALLY REALLY out of control and I'm not sure if it's because he needs a "booster" of the regular Focalin at that time or what. I'm going to wait until after school starts (we don't start until Sept 2nd) to see if we have the same issue. My son has an appointment with his developmental specialist the 2nd week after school starts so we'll touch base and see what (if anything) we should change. I should also mention that we just started the GFCF (gluten-free/casein-free) diet with my son and I'm hoping that it helps some of our issues. Does it matter if he doesn't make it through the entire school day? He's making it through the hardcore learning time. I say the school can just deal with it for 2 hrs. I'm sure it's still partially effective at that time. It doesn't suddenly wear off. I'm assuming the teacher is complaining, and I suggest that you ignore it. My 6 yr old ds is on focalinxr 10 mg. There is no zombie like effect and it does not affect his sleep. But it only lasts about 6 hours. By the time he gets on the bus he is WILD. It is such a problem that he may get kicked off the bus if we can't help him calm down a little. I just hate the thought of more medicine.... He takes a VSmile hand held game w/ earphones to help him focus on that instead of getting overstimulated w/ all of the kids on the bus , noise, movement , etc....I am just not sure if he is using it this year. It worked like a charm last year.... My son was on Focalin xr 10 mg then 15 mg in am.. It only lasted 4-5 hours for him. is body metabolizes meds very quickly. Anyway his doctor then had him take another 115 of xr at lunch time. Again, it only lasted the 4-5 hours so it was o ut of his system by bedtime. We have since stopped usiing it because his rebound was bad on it and it just doesn't last long enough for him. Hope this helps. Mars My son 10, was on Focalin XR 5 mg and it made him a zombie and he refused to take any meds. We finally got him to give Vyvanse a try and it has been doing well by him so far (8 months)Different children metabolize medication at different rates. If your child's meds are lasting 5 or 6 hours that is great; if he has school work in the last part of the school day that requires concentration you might want to ask your doctor to prescribe Focalin 5mg (not the xr) for dosing at school at 1pm. My 9 y/o is on focalin 15mgxr in the morning and it wears off in about four hours. If needed, he is given the 5mg after lunch. Folks, Remember, med stability is a transient state for children because of their constantly changing weight, age and rate of maturation. To have some level of stability for 6 months is a win! Regarding focalin, my guy was on it for over two years and had relatively good success with it. We had to continually raise the dosage and transition from short acting to XR. Regardless, we still ended up dosing at morning, noon and night. Since then we transitioned to Vyvance in the am and still administer Focalin short acting in the evening if the homework load begs it. I would love to have a med last all day at school, but it is difficult often resulting in afternoon dosing. But please, don't blow off the last two hours thinking that the 'school' can deal with it. As a husband to a 2nd grade teacher who often has several ADHD kids in her class room at one time, I can tell you, that dealing with 'those' kids diminishes the learning experience for the other 28 kids in the classroom. And believe me, their parents are just as vocal and concerned. So, if the meds are making it, consider a change or a noon dosing. Paul Hey Paul Thank you for your wonderful insight. We were actually on 5mg of Focalin XR until July when we moved to the 10mg dosage. We still had 20 of the 5mg dosage and were told that if we felt we needed to increase the 10 to 15mg, we could do so. I think tomorrow morning I'm going to call the developmental specialist and see if it's alright to go ahead and do so because Ashton's focus and attention and impulsiveness is all out the window right now. I'm not sure if it's stress & anxiety building from the upcoming school year or what but I cannot handle him when he's acting the way he has been. I don't expect the med to work all day, but I do wish it would work more than a couple hours! thanks again for your insight and suggestions... my 7yo dd has been on focalin xr for a while now. Currently she gets 10mg in the am and 5 mg at lunch. I would love it if it would last all day, but 15mg at one time makes her a zombie, with the same rebound around 1pm but about 100 times worse. i agree with Paul, it is alot to ask for from a teacher and socially isolating to a child. also with my daughters school, they still do things after 2pm. |
