sleeplessness | ADHD Information
this is my first time on thr message board ive never done anything like this before but im at my witts end.my son is ten years old and has been on equasym xl since december.hes great hen hes on it but the come down is terrible.he is almost worse than when he wasnt on it.he cant sleep.it is usually around 1.30am before he sleeps.its a nightmare.he gets so anxious and wont be left on his own.he sees the doc on friday.at the last visit he said if he doesnt improve they would perscibe meletonine but i dont know much about it.any ideas how i can help him relax.ive tried everything i can think of.protein before bed,rescue remedey just about everything.im tierd and worn out.help! A warm glass of milk, a couple of graham crackers and a nightly routine . Melantonin? It is great at helping a child fall asleep. It is a hormone that the body makes naturally.[it's what makes you feel tired when it gets dark.] There is a 1/2 hour window for maximum effectiveness. Once the child is up after that 1/2 hour ,it is harder to get them to sleep. I would start with 1 mg. Too high a dose can give nightmares or very vividdreams.Yeah, you can buy melatonin at walgreens for super cheap... I got like 480
pills for 13$... I reccomend it, no bad side effects although a tolerance can
be built to it fairly quickly, but it's better than taking something like
benadryl at night.thanks for the reply.it sounds like meletonine is going to be worth a try.its its nice to know there are people out there who know what im going through.i live in a small village and even my friends dont really understand what its like for my son.school starts next week and im dreading it,byt im trying to be positive.the school has never dealt with adhd before so i suppose they are learning to.thanks again.
i just wanted to say that if u give him 1mg and he has bad dreams then u can cut the pill in half. we actually have to cut ours in 4 peices b/c my son can only have .25 mg or gets bad dreams. so just go smaller if that happens. good luck.

try melatonin. Start with 1 mg and go up to 6 mg max. You can buy it anywhere -- safeway, walmart, target.
