Questions for Pediatrician? | ADHD Information

No insight as our specialist is the one who handles all of our autism and ADHD issues and meds.

But support and hugs I do have.... good luck!

Hi Everyone,

My 6 yo was just diagnosed with ADHD by a pediatric psychologist (TOVA score >99.9.)  It's been a tough decision, but we've decided to medicate before she falls any further behind in school.  DD has an appointment with her pediatrician next week.

What questions should I be sure to ask?  I must admit I'm a bit overwhelmed.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

hi and welcome. It is SO overwhleming, especially at first. A few recommendations. Start a journal. I'd start it now before the docotrs. Log eating and sleeping habits and behavior. It doesnt have to take up your whole day, just jot down times and track these things. This way once you start meds you'll have something to compare to. Meds are tricky and most people do not get their first prescription and hit pay dirt, so be patient. If you get great results right away....YAY!!! It is usually best to see a child psychiatrist (even better a psychiatrst/psyhcopharmocologist) to manage meds. However, no reason the pediatrican cannot start something while you look for one and get on the waiting list you will probably have. Many pediatricians are experienced in meds and can handle straightforward cases. It's just if you do run into any situations down the road a psychatrist is better experienced with these kids of meds.

Good luck, keep reading there's a lot fo fgood information here. Let us know how you make out and keep asking questions..........you'll do fine...............

I agree with Diane, Keep a journal of everything that goes on . It will help you in the long run.

Thanks, Diane.  VERY helpful!  And thanks, Jenn, for the hugs--- can't get too many of those! :)

Great idea about starting the journal before DD's appointment.  I'll start today.

Frankly, I was a little suprised that our Ped group treats ADHD, since so many refer it out.  I'll research our child psych/pharm options and be sure to ask the doc at what point he typically refers.

Many thanks!
