tics

Hi!  I am new here and I hope someone here can help ease my mind and give me some much needed advice.  My 11yo ds was diagnosed with adhd 8 months ago and we started with strattera.  It worked beautifully for 12 days, then stopped.  Upped the dose and ds had hallucinations (bugs in bed and ghosts - horrible for a child).  Started lowest dose of Adderall - nothing.  Started lowest dose of concerta - improved well enough to function but started tics.  Increased dose after a couple of months to 36 mg and has been on it for nearly 4 mo.  Suddenly intense tics started a week ago and yesterday psychiatrist took him off and started him on Guanfacine, .25 mg 3xdaily.  What I have read about this med is that more than likely it will not help him and so far he has had no relief.  His tics, with no Concerta today, are just as bad, and he is crazy hyper.  I am sure he needs time, but it is so painful to watch.  They are so bad this time, if I didn't know this child, I would swear he had Tourette's.  I asked dr why this med and he said I worry too much about tics, so we take care of tics.  I do worry but I want him to continue to do well in school.  He just started school a week ago and LOVES it - for the first time in his life!  Today he begged me to put him back on Concerta.  Can someone tell me what my best options are?  How long do I give this med before I should expect a change?

my son has tics too and i am also trying to find info on this med. (tenex) if this is the first day your son is off of concerta that could be why he has been so hyper. i think it takes a few days for them to return back to how they were before meds. i am thinking of putting mine on gaunfacine and vyvanse. the vyvanse works wonderful and the only effect is the tics and i have also heard this med can calm them down. if it doesnt work we will have to put him on it by itself. i wish i had answers for u. just wanted to let u know we are having the same prob. i would aleast try it a week and see how it works. i hope u get alot of replies im curious also how this med works!

Tenex (Guanfacine) take 6-8 weeks to build up in their system.   Generally, you start at a low dosage and work up from there.    We use it in conjunction with Concerta to help lessen tics.  It didn't totally make them go away, but did lessen them for a while.    Tics can be transient for some kids and come and go.   We are in a period where they are back - but not really bothering my daughter too much.
anytime we stopped a med for tics, it took a little time for them to pass completely, but they will. Guanfacine (tenex) did not help for my daughter. BTW, FOR US, Concerta was one of the worst for tics. We've used a lot of different meds and some caused worse tics than others. Everyone is different and everyone reacts different. Unfortunately there's no way to know and trial and error is the only option. It's hard with tics as they take some time to settle down generally. If it's being caused or increased by the meds, it should pass fairly quickly off it though. Our 10 yr old son had got severe tics on Concerta.  We took him off right away and  were told that stimulants shouyld be avoided for him.  We started strattera 5 weeks ago-  I haven't seen great results and I think he is more argumentative than ever.  I'm thinking about stopping the strattera and giving no meds.  I feel bad about it because the concerta really was working but the tics were horrible.  I'm scared to try any other medicine.Obviously each child responds differently to each med but generally I've
heard that Daytrana is less likely to cause tics. Anybody else experience
this?

Thank you guys so much for your responses.  Ds has been doing fairly well on the Guanfacine.  Coming off of the Concerta was bad but I have seen him worse without using the guan.  The tics have somewhat lessened, which is a relief, but his eyes are tired and early yesterday evening he just wanted to go to sleep.  Yesterday he went back to school from the long weekend and the teacher sent me a very nice email saying he had a great day.  I am hopeful this medicine will work enough until we can buddy up to a new stimulant.

sunny641, I understand how you feel.  So many times I just wanted to stop the meds because the results sometimes made him worse than he was before.  But some very good friends around me kept me focused by telling me - "If he had diabetes, you'd give him diabetes medicine".  ADHD, I have had to come to realize, is real.  And once you find that golden med that works and turns your child into what you know he can be, it's so worth the trial and errors.  Hang in there - there has to be one that will work. :)

I have never heard of Daytrana.  I would love to hear if anyone has tried it!

We used Daytrana and YES tics were VERY minimal. We liked it, but my daughter is older (14) and did not particularly like wearing a ptch and preferred a pill which she could take without assistance. On a sleepover she can bring her little pill fob with her meds in it and just take them. With the patch she needed help. I didnt like how long it took to "kick in", we needed an am booster dose and for her she ate nothing. remember everyone, every child reacts differently

My son has been on several meds and has developed tics with all of them except Dytrana. We have tried ritalin, dexadrine, adderal, Vyvanse, and they work for awhile then the tics appear. We have been dealing with this for 6 years. He has also taken Risprodal. The Dytrana was great only he developed a rash where ever the patch was placed. His sides were full of sores fron itching.

For over a year whenever his tics would surface I would take him to our NUCCA chiropracter and after his adjustment they would go away. This however hasn't worked since school has started this year. So right now he is on nothinf but fish oil. It is not enough!

Does anyone know of a more natural med to try. There are so many out there I wouldn; know where to begin.

I feel your pain.  We have the same issue.  We have our 10 yur old son on 40 mg of strattrera and the results aren't dramatic like with the other meds but I think they help a little.  I'm considering taking him off them because the cost to result ratio is not that great.

We did nutrition deficiency tests though Specta Cell lab.  They were expensive but insurance helped.  We found that he was deficient in magnesium and now have him on regular multivitamins and extra magnesium also fish oil-2000mg a day.  Make sure you get your vitamins at a natural food store or CoOp.  We also had our son tested for allergies.  If you have a natural food store around you can go in there and they usually have someone there that can help you.

We still have the biggest isssue with his handwriting.  It was so much better when he was on the concerta but with strattera it is still so sloppy.  I understand your pain.  We are dealing with the same thing.

I took welbutrin at about age thirteen, it gave me tics...it was very embarrasing.  If you feel that your doctor is being too dismissive of your concern I would not feel bad about going around for second opinion.  Sometimes doctors feel they do not have the time to look beyond their initial decision.

We actually have an appointment with a Neurologist this Monday because both the psychologist and psychiatrist are thinking it's possible he is having seizures instead of labeling them as tics.  They told me they are abnormal for tics and they aren't going away - even after him being off of the stimulant and on the Tenex for 3 weeks now.

Thanks for your input!
