non stimulant drugs? | ADHD Information

I had read that stimulants don't work so well for the Inattentive/Impulsive type of ADHD which is what she has. But I just found one study that indicated this, so maybe it's not widely known yet or very well established? I'm only just learning about all this. Maybe there are other types of ADHD meds besides stimulants and Strattera?

Not FDA approved. I'm curious the study you read about the stimulants not working for impulse control and focus. I think if you keep researching you'll find the opposite is true.

My daughter is 14, was diagnosed at 5 and has been taking meds since age 9. She has taken a LOT of different meds. Stimulants really have the best symptom control.

Hi, I'm parent to a 12-y.o. girl who was recently diagnosed with ADHD-I or combination. We have been trying behavior therapies for years, and although they help, neither she nor we are completely happy with the results.  I'm reading that because she does not have the hyperactive piece, it doesn't necessarily make sense for her to take a stimulant. The only non-stimulant I can find is Strattera, which scares me since DD also has a depression and self-image issue (I'm sure from all those years of people telling her she's lazy and why can't she just get stuff done). The side effects seem to be terribly risky for people with those issues.

So, any ADHD meds that aren't stimulants?
Hi, my daughter takes Strattera and I've actually thought it helped her mood become more even keeled. Stimulants works wonderfully for focus only issues. I'm not suer hwo or why you were told stims were not the way to go....hmmmmmm....interesting. Personally, I would actually go stimulant first. It's in an out of your system quickly. You know right away whether or not they work and how it'll work for your child. Takes some tweaking and occasionally adjusting, but basically it's quick. That said, I would not count out Strattera for sure. It's a good med. Takes a while though to see your optimum results. Other antidepressants can be used off label. Wellbutrin is the most common I believe. My daughter hs taken both Nortyptiline and Desipramine. We liked both, but truthfully none of them helped for focus enough for school for her. Her current meds are Strattera and a low dose of Methylin ER (which is a long acting generic methylphediante like Ritalin). Works great, FOR HER.
