a couple of weeks ago i posted that my sons meds are really working when hes on them but he cant sleep at nite.his meds wear off at about 4 oclock and then its mayhem.on average he is falling asleep around 1.30 am.its no good for him and its so no good for me.the psyciatrist suggested meletonin but wanted me to do another 12 weeks before he would pescribe it.here in engand you cant just buy it it has to be pescribed.well i am so sleep deprived and so is my son although he seems to function ok the next day, unlike me!so ive ordered some 1mg meletonin from america which should arrive anyday soon.the trouble is im starting to feel really bad about it.as in, what will his psyciatist say? what if it harms him? what if he refuses to treat him?my friends think i should go ahead with it as they can see how bad things are.i know its up to me but could do with some advice or reassurance or not as the case may be.thanks for listening

I've no experience with kids taking melatonin, so I'll stay out of that part.  Here's one approach on your other dilemma (sp?)... once the Melatonin arrives, call this doc, tell him (again) you are going out of your gourd because of your sleepless nights because of your son's sleepless nights because of the meds he prescribed, and tell him you got your hands on some melatonin (make it a bit easier by saying a friend from the States gave you the melatonin) and ask him what dose he recommends.

ps.  12 weeks to "wait and see" is way too long in my humble opinion--I'd look for a new doc if this one continues to be so inconsiderate.

i wouldnt say anything to the dr personally. i also felt bad about doing the melatonin until i saw how it helped my little boy go to sleep at a decent hour. it cant be good for him to not sleep. mine was fine on 1/4 of a 1mg pill. barely a peice of the pill. everyone has only said good things about it on here and my dr says its fine to give them. i would still keep asking the dr for it. and if they wont give it to u then keep getting it from the u/s if its helping your son. here u dont need a prescription so think its not something thats dangerous. start with cutting up the pill and see if u can give him a very low dose. u will know if its too much b/c they will have  bad dream. i gave mine 1/2 the first time and he said he had a bad dream so the next time i cut the pill into 4 peices and he was fine. now we take tenex and that helps him go to sleep so we dont need the melatonin right now but i am glad i found it. who knows we may need it again. u dont have to give it to him every single night. maybe u can just do it on school nights. i always gave my son a fair chance to go to bed on his own but if he wasnt sleeping by a certain time i would give him some. i hope u figure something out. i agree about 12 weeks being way too long!! thats 3 months with no sleep.
