Need Ideas | ADHD Information

Hi!

It's been quite a while since I posted anything, but I'm back and need help....Basically my son is 7 and was diagnosed with ADHD Combined type last year.  His father and I decided we would only medicate him if it interfered with his education (which it is!).  We went to see a psyciatrist and he recommeneded Ritalin.  I personally am against giving my child an Amphetamine based drug.  So, this is where I need help.  Can anyone recommend a medication?  Also I heard a lot about giving the kids something to "play" with during class time to aid in focusing, does anyone have any ideas.  My son is in 2nd grade and constantly getting in trouble for not sitting still, talking, and not completing his work.  Appreciate any ideas...Thanks

Hi.

Ritalin is methylphedinate not amphetamine. Always remember if you give meds a try you can stop AT ANY time.

Our psyhciatrist has always said "busy hand are happy hands" , and it's true. But that will probably only help with figeting and those annoying classroom behaviors like tapping the pencil or fingernails on the desk. There are some occupational therpay tricks that work for focus if the inattention is sensory related. Most of thiese things won't work well enough for ADHD symtpoms. There's a book called The Out of Sync Child by Carol Kranowitz, GREAT OT book about SPD and the excercises that help.

Does the school have a plan set up for him ? What about his social involvement with peers at school. They should give him specific social skills instruction and rehearsal preferably in the school setting and interacts with peers, contact them and set up a meeting. Ask the Dr. for another suggestion on medications you can give your child. Ask your pharmacist for a suggestion. Good Luck . The school may also have ideas .
