How is your son doing now on Day 2?

Today was our first day with Vyvanse 20mg for my daughter.  Things were really weird at first.  I gave it to her at 7:30 AM.  She paced the floor back and forth for about 2 hours and talked non-stop.  She would get very frustrated if someone else talked.  I had to send her little brother to my mom's because she kept yelling at him for "messing up" her stuff, which he wasn't doing.  She didn't want to leave the house which is very unusual for her.  Then, after 1pm she started acting better.  She went to my parents with my husband for awhile and they called and told me she was being an angel.  But, she seems to get obsessed and fixated on things for hours.  She won't let things go.

She does have a lot of anxiety and these meds just seem to make it worse.  I guess that is what's happening?????  I guess we will try again tomorrow.  But, if she paces the floors again and talks non-stop, I won't be able to give it to her on Monday and then send her to school.  Any suggestions would be great!!!

Yeah !!  That makes me feel so much better about giving it to her again today after I heard your remarks about your son.

Her usual bedtime on a school night is 8PM, but last night we put her to bed at 9.  I let her leave the light on for about 40 minutes to look through books to get her settled down.  By 10:30 she had fallen asleep.  But, she had sleep issues before the medicine, so who knows what we are in for tonight.

I have seen some posts about melatonin on the boards for sleep.  You may want to check that out if he continues to have sleep issues.  I read in a book if you give the kids something to stare at during the night like a screen-saver or a night light that has motion, it could help them fall asleep.  I have not tried it, so I'm not sure if it really helps or not.

I'm so happy things are going good for you right now.  I will post again tonight after we see how day 2 went for us.

he has done excellent on day 2..no more emotional roller coaster..the only thing and ill see tonite how he sleeps..but last nite on his first nite goin to bed...he went right to sleep at 10..but then was up at 130..and he didnt go back to sleep till bout 430....so im hopin that was just his body adjusting to the meds..we will see how he sleeps tonite...i gave him a benadryl tonite because he has a cold..that should help him sleep as well..other than that..he has been doin great..i cried today because he did so well on the homework we have been fighting for a week to get him to do..he did it in 10 min..it was amazing!!>..im not sure what to think about your daughter other than give it another day or 2 and see what happens..things may subside or may get worse..if they get worse id deff call ur doc..I know on first day nmy son got obsessed with playin a computer game and he wanted to do it all day long..but we didnt let him..which then came the waterworks lol..but today there was none of that..we told him no and he was ok with it..went on with his day ..which is a first as well..so as of right now im really pleased with the medicine..ill keep you posted...Sometimes if the dose is not high enough that is what causes the emotional issues.  We can usually tell when our daughter needs her meds upped because she starts crying about everything.  Also watch out for anxiety issues.  Sometimes the stimulants can make small anxiety disorders a HUGE problem.  We just found out at the beginning of summer that our daughter who is 9 and has been on meds for 4 years has anxiety disorder.  We started Zoloft and all the things we just thought were her silly fears went away.  She's no longer afraid of bugs or water or the dark.  It's great!  Just a couple thoughts.

Today is my sons first day on vyvanse 30mg...and things were ok..and then i noticed he is soooo emotional..u tell him no and he cries..and he just sticks to the same thing over and over again after you tell him no..and cries every time..he is like an emotional rollercoaster right now..I dunno if its his body adjusting or what..i am getting so frusterated...i just wanna scream

How old is your child, and how much does he weigh?  I beleive 30mg is the losest starting dose for Vyvanse, but it is also in the group of meds (ritalin, concerta, adderall) that can cause those kind of rebound side effects especially in the early evening.  These side effects will either diminish over the next 3 days or will get worse.

Many of us have had to use other meds to balance these side effects because the benefit of the Vyvanse is worth it.  But it is too soon for you to make that determination.  I would make an appointment with your Psych as soon as possible and if things do level out, you can always cancel.

Finally, try to get protein (cheese, yogert, peanut butter) into your child as soon as he gets home from school.  Avoid sugar and carbos because they will only add to the mood when he comes down from the 'sugar high'.  Yea, I know, he's lost his appetite, but do whatever to get food into that kid.

Good luck and keep us posted.

well he was emotional all day really..so its hard to say whether or not its just him adjusting from the meds..thas why imma give him till sunday to see if things improve or not..if they do not..im not gonna give him the med monday for school..and ill call the doc monday and see bout lowering the dose to 20mg..which is the lowest for vyvanse..he was fine from bout 5 on..his usual self..so i dunno lol..he did eat dinner..2 pieces of pizza and a couple chips..he is on 30 mg of the med right now..I dun wanna get him on other meds to counteract the side effects..if he has those side effects by sunday..then he either needs lower dose or to try something else..but we shall see..its deff to early to say..with this being his very first time trying meds..his body is prolly thrown for a loop.

Hi,

Vyvanse now is available at 20mg. My ds did well on it but it caused tics. My daughter was on 30mg and I am trying 20mg currently because of appetite issues. I am not sure that it's the best med but I am having no emotional issues just doesn't seem to be effectively working on the focus.

yea its too soon for me to tell yet if this is the med for him since its his first day on it..we will see what the weekend brings..if he is still so emotional on sunday..then imma have to see bout lowering the dose..because i dont wanna send him to school on monday with medicine that makes him cry..that could be a bad thing and embarass him.
