Generic Adderall

I have just started Adderall and received the generic form, Amphetamine Salt Combo. Is there much of a difference between the generic and the brand?

I'm afraid you won't find name-brand Adderall (short acting), only generics.  The only name brand Adderall that Shire makes is Adderall XR (long acting).   You may found, as I did, dramatic differences in effectiveness of the generic Mixed Amphetamine Salts depending on the manufacturer.   One maker's MAS does nothing for me!  I've learned to ask the pharmacist before I hand them the script to make sure which generic they have in stock.  I prefer the generic MAS made by Barr, which I believe bought from Shire the patent for regular Adderall.

I apologize for bringing such an old thread back to life. However, I would like to clarify something, if I may?. Yes, there is a 'brand' name Adderall IR on the market. I know because I have been on the brand name Adderall - not a generic, but the real thing for several years now. I am lucky that my insurance company covers the cost because the brand name Adderall is much more expensive than the generics which are available. I pay a higher co-payment, but that's all. If my insurance didn't cover it, I would not be able to afford it, and would be taking a generic. The brand name Adderall may have to be special ordered since most people take generics. Thus, many pharmacies simply don't keep the brand name Adderall in stock if there is not a demand for it.
I have taken a few generic versions, and in my opinion, there aren't any generics available that even come close to the brand name. I went that route for a short while, but made the switch over to Adderall IR several years ago and never looked back. But, thats just me. You may experience something entirely different. The only way to tell is by trying it and going from there. It may work much better for you, then again - it might not. For me, it works very well. Your mileage may vary.
Best wishes.

Dear SmallTownGirl,

Apologize....please don't!!  I was hoping my declaratory statement that the real  Adderal IR was no longer available would elicit evidence to the contrary--and with your reply it finally did!

Even though it was an Shire rep who told me over the phone it wasn't available any longer, I found it hard to believe.  Armed with this info from you, I will renew my quest, for like you, the generics don't hold a candle to the real McCoy!!

I don't have any insurance so I always try to go generic. Does anyone have an opinion on which generic company is best?
If you increase the dose with the generics, does it work as good as the brand name?
I'm recently diagnosed and my Dr. prescribed me Vyvanse because "Adderall is so expensive" and never even mentioned an Adderall generic...

It's too bad they don't (can't) give out "samplers" of these stimulant meds!!  I find a rather significant difference from one generic Adderall to the next.  Barr makes one that's worked for me, but there's a different generic that does absolutely nothing for me!  you ask about taking a larger dose in order to get the same effect as the brand name... I'm afraid it doesn't work that way!  It's quality, not quantity!  But don't despair yet... if you find a generic that works, it's a helluva lot less expensive than the name brand!

Thanks John D.

I had read that you prefered Barr and was hoping someone else would agree. It makes sense that since Barr bought the recipe they would be the best. Is the Barr brand just as good as the original?

how quickly I forget what I wrote!!  I've never had the original Adderall IR, so I don't know.  I suspect not.  I surfed around awhile back seeking the same info...what do others think of the various generic MAS and from what I could gather, some folks like Barr, some don't, some prefer this other generic or that other generic....   So, as the saying goes...to each his (or her) own!!

Thanks John D,

I have a Dr.'s appointment tomorrow so we'll see if he'll even prescribe it over the Vyvanse. I'll try the Barr first... then shop around if it doesn't seem to work as well as it should.
Smalltowngirl:  I hope this isn't actually the case- but I fear it may be for you.  The brand name Adderall IR was made by Shire.  They HAVE stopped manufacturing it- you can check their website.  You may have access to it for a awhile though because many people take generics, so the brand might be in stock for some time before it runs out.  I only know this because Shire, the mfr of Adderall just stopped making my former med- Dextrostat.  And I have been doing a lot of research as of late- trying to find something that can replace the Dextrostat- the generic is making me feel ill, however today is my first day.  Dont' quote me on this, but this is the information I have come across recenltly.  I think they have just stopped within the past month.  They DO still make Adderall XR (I don't remember if XR is correct- but the time release one).  Adderall was still on their list of meds as of Oct, but when I was on the website yesterday- it was gone.aesaintclair739766.7088194444

Since we're discussing the highly variable response success between name brand psychotropic drugs and their supposed equivalent generic versions, I'd like to mention an issue currently pending FDA consideraton.   Apparently Brand Name Big Pharma is asking the FDA to require that Generic Big Pharma conduct efficacy testing on generic knock-offs before being allowed on the open market.  Now, I'm no fan of the big pharmaceutical companies, brand name or generic, but in this case I have to side with the Brand Name companies like Shire.   There's no question that there is great variability in all of the various generic copies of Adderall, and since our health insurors generally insist we use the generics when available, I think it's essential and only reasonable that the generic manufacturers subject their product to testing to make sure it works.  I'd love to know how to share my feeling with the FDA on this--I think the more of us that can let the FDA know how we feel about this issue, the better!

John D- I could not agree with you more!!!

I currently had to stop taking Dextrostat(by Shire) because they stopped making it- I have been taking it for 7-8 years if my memory is serving my correctly- a long time in any case.  Of course I have now been prescribed dextroamphetamine by Barr- it is making me feel crappy- it's not therepeutically effective, and makes me the least attentive/focused I have ever been.  I am not kidding- I would be better with nothing.  I took it a few years back when the pharmacy messed up and felt the same way as well- went back and got Dextrostat for cash.  I don't think that they should have to test it just because of the insurance companies.  In my case- Shire stopped making it because generic jerks come around and drive Shire to no longer desiring to make it because they drive the price down.  Which is interesting.  I am only paying $6 less for whole botton than I paid with Shire- (no insurance right now).  They should have no right to have thier -20%/+25% crap.  Especially with meds like these- THEY ARE DOSE CRITICAL.  My life was a nightmare a month ago just knowing Shire was no longer making and the prescritpion I held in my hand would be the last (they even had to fill a few with Barr brand).  And here I am, day 2 of my Barr trial....unfocused, feeling like I hae a hang-over from taking my meds.  INSURANCE COMPANIES AND PHARMACUETICALS SHOULD LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE TAKING THE MEDS!!!

I was taking adderall XR and wanted to try addrerall IR. I was given a generic called amphata. I started taking it and I really had a BAD time with it. Is this the generic that Barr makes? "amphata".... is that the name of the manufacturer??  Generic Adderall is usually referred to as "mixed amphetamine salts"... if your script bottle doesn't say that somewhere on it, I'd call the pharmacist and ask what you've got!I'm in shock that the generic companies don't have to test them! I have a friend who is a pharmacist and she swears generics are the exact same as name brand but this is obviously not true.
I just filled my prescription of the generic salt combo made by COREPHARMA and I might as well be taking sugar pills. I think I may call my Dr. and ask him to prescribe me some more - hopefully he can put "use Barr only" so I can see the difference.
One point I notice no one has brought up. Most generic meds are made in China and if anyone has been following the lead toys, etc. this could very well be a problem!JohnD Amphata is what the generic was called I thaught it was made by Barr. I agree generics
so far I have had a bad experience.
I'm glad you gang brought this up because I'm taking ritalin SR, generic and it ain't doing squat here

Maybe I should demand brand name and see if it helps?

Well hopefully someone can find out and let US know how we can make sure our voices are heard by the FDA as it considers this issue of efficacy test requirements for generics!!

In the meantime, DazedandConfused--if the generic you just received doesn't work for you, here's what I did in order to not be stuck taking something that didn't work until my next refill.... I first called my doc and asked if he would write me another script (told him why-stuff didn't work), he said yes IF the Pharmacy and my Insurance Co. went along.  I called both the Pharmacy, then the Insurance Co. and they all said OK, so I picked up the new script and took it to the pharmacy and handed in the script and returned all the pills from the original prescription (minus the few I'd taken) and got them replaced with same drug made by a different maker that I knew worked for me.  It was a bit of a bother but sure as heck beats having to wait 3 months for the next prescription (I get a 3 month supply--saves $$!).

I wrote an email not really expecting anything except my voice to be heard - I've learned that Walgreens only carries COREPHARMA and that she'd let her supervisor know but they can't exchange drugs. I did get a new script mailed to me (I'm out of town) and I'm calling every pharmacy until I find one with BARR.

I'll let you know if I feel a difference or I'm going to the real thing too. Gotta love Big Pharma! I sometimes wonder if Big Pharma deliberately makes less effective generics just to force people to pay for Name Brand.

They cry "poor mouth" but they have the largest profit margins in the world except for oil.

And it's OUR HEALTH they are messing with.

The whole Vyvanse thing really make me wonder. Did they even fully test that sh*t? Why are so many ADHD'ers complaining about it?

"Smaller pharmaceutical companies"--well I have to wonder, really. I mean with all the weaselly who-knows-who-actually-owns-what of the corporate world, who knows how many smaller companies Big Pharma REALLY own

Makes me wonder just how honest their freakin' agenda really is
MetisRebel39775.4456481481I'm with you MetisRebel!

Funny, I'm a bumper sticker freak and even though I'm on one of their "cocktails" I just but an Anti-Big Pharma sticker on.
And unrelated, I actually DID get run over the other day at the airport by one of those luggage carts and APOLOGIGED!
To the luggage cart or the operator?
