Hi,
You have been through alot. I can only add that the additional tests can be used to rule other things out. Learning problems can lead to depression. Additionally, other tests can give you a broader look at how your child learns and their strengths and weakness. We have done most every test for our son and for me it tells me more of what he doesn't have than what he does. Good luck
My daughter was diagnosed ADHD last year. We have known since she was 2 there was something going on. She was always ahead of schedule developmentally (walking, talking, etc.)and very strong willed. She had horrible tantrums that would sometimes last over an hour. Not to mention she was diagnosed 1 week after her 2nd birthday with stage 3 kidney cancer. She has gone through so much. At age 2 she went through surgery and 8 mos. chemo, 1 week radiation. She actually did very well considering all she went through. Then at 5 she had an abdominal adhesion that completely blocked her small bowel and was in extreme pain. Now that I have filled you in with this info. I will get to the point. We started meds last year for ADHD and just can not seem to get it right. She suffers from horrible anger issues and fits most of th symptoms of depression. But, not all the time. Everything I have read says that kids that suffer from depression and anxiety may not display the signs for long periods of time like adults. Which would be true in this case. my daughter goes through spells were she is withdrawn and very unmotivated. I know she does have anxiety issues, but I also worry she may be suffering from some depression. I spoke with her pediatrician which I am close to and he referred her to a therapist. The therapist office called today to set up the appt. and said with our insurance we will need to pay 00.00 up front for 2 test. She said we would need and IQ test and a projective anxiety test. Has anyone ever heard of this when testing for depression. I understand the anxiety test, but I am not sure why she would need the IQ test. She is not delayed in school in any way. I have called and I am waiting to hear back from them before scheduling. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with anxiety or depression along with the ADHD and did they perform these test? Thanks for reading my post and sorry it is so long and drawn out.Wow, you sure have been through alot, as has she! It sure sounds like her system is over-worked likely from fighting all the cancer, that adds stress to anyone's system, esp. a little child's.
I agree - the testing just helps reduce hte number of potentials I have to think about ... helps me narrow my focus/search.
IF anything, perhaps we can simply offer you support as you work your way through all this for your child, sometimes, a good listening ear sure helps.
Thanks guys for your post. I am still waiting to hear from the therapist about the testing. Surely if the IQ test gives us info we need to properly diagnose then that is what we will do. thanks again Oh you have been through so much! She sounds like my DD! She's now 7 has severe ADHD, Severe Impulse control issues AND a MOOD DISORDER. Okay, the tantrums...the up an down...could be a mood disorder and not ADHD. Or it could be both like my DD. Sometimes ADHD is misdiagnosed and it could be Bi-polar. Now it is very rare when the actually say, "This child is bi-polar." Due to to age and growth it could change. My DD has a switch her brain, like someone turned it on and off...tantrum one minute, sweetheart the next. I would look into a possible mood disorder? The good thing is there are meds to help! DD takes Seroquel at night. Helps her sleep and helps her calm the tornado in her brain. It's not perfect, but it does help a great deal! I wish you success!!!! Much love to you both, Kim Definatley see a therapist hon and see what he or she says. An IQ test is
