starting concerta

I have decided to try medicating my oldest son who is 14.  The doctor prescribed him 27mg of concerta.  My youngest has been on Metadate for three years now, but I have never medicated my oldest.  He doesn't have the behavioral issues my youngest does, and being a single mom it was also a money decision.  But he is struggling with his disorganization and focussing and starting high school.  I am just wondering what are some of the general side effects that anyone with their children on concerta have experienced?  With him being older, I am sure I will get a great feedback about it from him.  He has agreed to give it a try, and if the meds don't make him feel weird or funny he says he will be okay with them.

My son was almost 7 when we started concerta. He dealt with loss of appetite, for a long time, as well as a LITTLE trouble with sleep.

Both went away as his body adjusted to the med.

You might find that you son needs an increase in his dose, 27mg is low. Trial and error, that is the only way to find out since it is not weight, nor age based.

Concerta has really been a god-send to our son. I hope it helps yours!

Decreased appetite is our main side effect - however she makes up for whatever she doesn't eat during the day at night.   Tics appear now and then, but they aren't concerta specific - we have seen them on Ritalin LA, and Focilan XR.   Her teacher reported an tic on her teacher forms before we started meds, so it's also somewhat anxiety related.

Concerta has worked really well for my daughter as well.
I've been on Concerta for almost six years now and although I've had some
doubts about it, I definitely don't know WHAT I would of done without it. It's
been especially helpful these past few years of high school, where skills like
organization, paying attention in class, and time management are the keys
to success.

I do lose my appetite every time i take Concerta and I even sometimes
wonder about how Concerta effects my emotions. Despite all this, I am
definitely glad my parents put me on Concerta because it has been
immensely helpful for school.

thanks for all the advise.  Especially trackgirl166.  It really helps to hear from someone close to my son's age taking the same meds.  What it help's with you is what we are aiming for.  He is on a low dose and so far he says he can't tell a difference.  Except for decreased appetite, but he eats something at lunch still.  The doctor wants to wait till next week to make an adjustment if need be.  Thanks everyone!!
