| Focalin xr and Emotions | |||
| |
My son is on 10mg of Focalin XR and his teacher said he has been very emotional during the day! I have also noticed it at home where he will cry more than usual at absolutely nothing! Anyone else experience this? My ds had emotional meltdowns with concerta when the dose was too high. Some meds have that side effect. Maybe it is too high a dose or you need to try a different med. Sometimes if you give it a few weeks, the side effect will lessen or go away. Talk to your dr. about it. Find out if it is happening at a certain time of day. Maybe it is when he is coming off the meds perhaps?I know that my own son gets very emotional and whiney when he's hungry. The meds do not slow his appetite at all (as he's on Risperdal, which INCREASES his appetite) so we've found if he gets hard to handle or fussy/whiney, that giving him a snack usually fixes the problem. But to be on the safe side, I would call your child's doctor and see what they say He might be experiencing a lull in the amount of Focalin in his bloodstream. I would say giving him a small dose of the regular Focalin in the middle of his day would be something to try. Focalin is also a very picky med, the contents of one's stomach really does affect its availability. Since he's taking XRs, he should never use any sort of OTC meds for heartburn/acid reflux/etc, due to the fact it messes with its release. As always, if you have any concerns regarding your child's health, contact your provider. He is the most important ally you have regarding your sons medication. As mentionded above, make sure he is eating and well hydrated to be at his best for dealing with school, meds and everything else. My youngest was a little more emotional on focalin than on concerta. I think the way the first dose is released with a later second dose, there can be a little roller coaster with the med for some people. This might smooth out with a higher dose (lengthen the first release so it merges better with the second). This may just not be the right med for your son or he may need a combo of meds for full effectiveness. Talk to the doc about your options. Do not be discouraged about needing to try different meds or even combinations to get the best results for your son. These meds are a little different for each individual and it can take some trial and error to find the best fit. |
