My daughter is also on Seroquel. she takes 75 mg now...and she takes Zyrtec for allergies when on it. The allergy med may make it worse. My DD takes it 1 1/2 before bed...and within that time she becomes very very sleepy. Now, when she first started on it, it did take some time to adjust...mornings where horirble because she was a bit groogie. Watch food allergies too...red dye 40 is a bad mix on my daughter.
Are there tantrums or why the Seroquel? It sounds like ADHD at church.
Jon's new doctor who lives only 30-40 minutes away (yay- no more 6 hours to Miami every few weeks!!) just added a new med called Seroquel 25mg on Tuesday night. We had been giving Jon benedryl at night and in the morning for his allergies and she said to stop it- that it could have side effects. Although, after several months, all it has done is help his allergies.
Well, last night at church, when I went to pick up the boys from TeamKid at 8pm, I found Jon sitting in the front lobby behind the volunteer's desk. His teacher had sent him there for super hyperactivity and non stop talking. She told me he has been like this on Wednesday nights but last night was pretty bad and her assistant wasn't there to help her.
Jon was pretty rank last night and also this morning. He is demanding, is causing trouble with his siblings, not listening and being a narl (nasty arrogant rotten l). His doctor said the new medication would take 3 weeks to kick in but his attitude has changed in two days. This is driving me to distraction. I wonder if it is the medication... anyway I am praying that Jon stabilizes today or one of us is going to be in need of a loooooong vacation.
Just venting.
randyjim39716.2756134259Hi. How old is your son? I really hope this new med works...and it takes less than 3 weeks to work. I just sent out two posts to get my feelings out today. Usually I feel better after venting, but not today.
I see that you're 6 hours from Miami...I am about 3 hours north of Miami myself. I'm glad you found someone closer and really hope it works for you. I am on a mission today to find a new doc for my son as I am not happy with his current one...as you'd see in one of my posts I just put up.
I know you were just venting and not looking for advice, which is good because I'm to new to all of this to give any really. I just wanted to let you know I hear ya and feel your pain. (And our children's pain.)
Heather
Childern with ADHD shouldn't take benedyl. The Dr. is right have them recommend a medication. It's Hard on very one until the medication kicks in, good luck and thing should get better. gram/239716.642037037Hi randyjim,
We only tried meds once (see my post under Focalin @ the meds bulletin board), but from what I've heard, they should start working relatively fast.
I recommend you start journaling any changes -good or bad- that you see. It is a fact that for some children, meds will work very well, for others they won't do a thing, and for others yet, the side effects, rebounds and/or the need to constantly increase dosage will make them a bad choice. My ds was on the last category, but I've seen here many moms that are pleased with the results. And reading you impressions after a few weeks will help you determine the best way to treat your ds.
Best of luck!
Randy, you mention that Jon just started taking Seroquel. You have good cause for concern as Jons behavior sounds manic. It might be a good idea to call your pharmacist and ask what the accetpable and unacceptable side effects of this medicaion are. I know for those with bipolar disorder this medication can send the child into a mania. I dont know what Jons exact diagnosis is but I would call the pharmacist just for peace of mind. That poor little guy and my heart goes out to you a well mom. Your doing a great job and I will keep my fingers crossed that this is just a temporary side effect. Luvmykids0239716.5523148148You said that Jon's allergies were helped by giving him Benadryl twice a day. Is there a reason he doesn't take one of the 24-hour allergy medicines? Zyrtec is a good OTC one. Allegra also is good, and it's less expensive due to being rx.
My child's ADHD goes haywire when his allergies are bad. It's possible this is contributing to what you're seeing, in addition to possible side effects of the Seroquel.
I hope you get it sorted out soon.
Hi Randy, You know I'm with you!
You've gotten some good advice, so I'm just going to say ... Keep praying and I'm going to add your prayers to mine daily. Hang in there!!
I finally got Jon to sleep. I called his new psychiatrist who prescribed the seroquel and told her his symptoms which included cold clammy hands and saying destructive things ( like a nuclear bomb is going to kill him). He also was screaming almost nonstop. She told me to stop the seroquel immediately.
I am not giving him Zyrtec or another allergy med. He does have nasonex but I am not giving that to him either. I am going back to the benedryl at night. Actually, I gave it to him this evening and he went to sleep because of the melatonin and risperadol as well as the benedryl. I can't forget what the psychiatrist told me at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami when Jon was inpatient in May this year. And that is they give benedryl and introvenous benedryl to calm down the children that are out of control because it has the fewest side effects. So that is why the benedryl and not the other meds. I just want my Jon back the way he was. It wasn't perfect and he could be a pain in EVERONE's neck but he wasn't totally manic like this med made him. I suppose I have to wait a few days for the seroquel to get out of his system.
Can you just imagine what it must be like to our poor children when we give these medications to them and they can't control themselves or know why they are feeling the way they do? It truly makes me cry! And he wanted to cuddle tonight and I have such a bad rash from stress/fear that I can't have anything touch my skin for now. Hopefully we will all feel better tomorrow.
Thanks for the support and suggestions.
Randy
