My DS (8) has been on Concerta 18mg for a few weeks and then just started 27mg on Monday. My question is I thought these ADHD meds also helped with implusive control. At school today my son broke his new glasses. The teacher said it was out of nowhere! He was calm and boom, ripped then off and broke them.. And then of course he had a fit that he broke them and cried he wanted a new pair and started to throw things. He has done this other times with a new toy. What does it sound like to you guys?
Thanks for anything
Marie
My son did the same thing right after we started w/concerta. That was the first ADD med he ever took. He'd only had the glasses a few weeks and it was his first pair. We had them replaced on the warranty, no charge, but then a few weeks after that he did the same thing. We didn't replace the second pair until the next year. He said he didn't need them. Both times he was frustrated, however. My DD is 8 alos..has always had Serve Impluse control. She's been on almost everything...Medidate CD, Ritalin LA, Concerta, and now Adderall XR. Concerta helped her, but the ritalin salts didn't work on her for very long. We changed her meds 13 times in 9 month...just try something new and see if it works! We're going to be trying Vyvanse next becasue teh Adderall has now stopped working. And try to be positive when he does good things. I try to stay postive more than negative...when she does something she shouldn't be doing I stay calm. When she does something good...no matter how small...I tell her good job!
Good luck...keep the faith!
The med's are probably not working because the exact dose and medication hasn't been found for your son yet. This is why patients are put through a trial of medication. When your child is taking medication that he is receptive to you should see maximum benefit and every child is different. All ADHD medications address issues of impulsivity and 27 ml of Concerta is a fairly low dose even though there are some patients that respond to that dose well. Some children respond very well to that med and dose and some don't. Sometimes several med's have to be tried in order to find one that your child will respond well to. It sounds to me like at this point the medication is not working yet because either the dose or medication is not right for him . What is effective for one child may not be for another with regard to stimulant medications and dosing. For a small percentage of children, the medication just dont work for different reasons. Speak with your child's physician as either the dose will be upped or the med will be changed. This is fairly common when the child is going through a trial of medication so don't be alarmed. Unfortunately, in the absence of effective medication you can't talk the child out of impulsive behavior but once the right med and dose are achieved, everything will come together very nicely Hang in there Luvmykids0239718.7759722222
