Bi-polar after three visits? | ADHD Information

Share

My 6 y/o son just started taking Vyvanse 30 mg. It worked great for two weeks and thenhe started with the impulsive behavior at school and he hit a girl who threw his watch on the floor and he bit a boy because the boy knocked him off the monkey bars when he was hanging upside down. I decided that he might need the next dose up of Vyvanse so I had to take him back to the psych in order to get that.

Well when my ds started going back to his other ways about half way through the day he would start with the bad self comments and how he does nothing right and he's stupid and he should just die.

Well the phych said that if this dose of vyvanse doesn't work in two weeks they are going to put him on bi-polar meds. My son has only been to this person three times and for a total of 45 minutes out of a month. How could they decide to put him on bi-polar meds from this? I looked up bi-polar and my son does not seem to have 'manic' episodes or some of the other things listed. I mean this is a med that I read people have to stay on forever and they are already contemplating this?

What should I do? Get a second opinion...change to a doc that will do more testing and not just go straight to this conclusion?

I have read so many posts on here where other children say the same things about them selves...including wanting to die or kill them selves at times. Isn't depression something that can be caused by the ADHD? I mean he is only 6 and the vyvanse worked very good for two weeks. Doesn't it take a while to get to the right dosage....before just jumping to the bi-polar meds.

Thanks for your comments and help.

My first impression is that possibly this doctor may not be right for this situation. When you have a doctor come out and say "Thsi child is or may be Bi-polar", it's God like syndrome.  That may be a scary doctor you are dealing with. My daughter is on Seroquel, which is used to treat Bipolar and is an anti-phsycotic, but her doctors will NOT say...she is bi polar. They simply say it's a Mood Disorder and we let it be at that. Treat the symtoms...not the named disorder. Hopefully that makes sense.

I say try a completely differnet med...most doc's start with a Ritalin type product because it's been used for like 50 years. And then work they're way through it...if one doesn't work, then off to the next. We did have to change meds 13 times the first 9 months. BUT OUR KIDS ARE WORTH IT!

My heart goes out to you...just remember, try try again and hopefully tomorrow is a better day!

Much love, Kim

lexismom39717.5943518519I concur, switch doctors and/or try different meds.

Dump the doctor and change meds!! My boys, 7 and 10, were down right jeckle and hyde on vyvanse. We switched back ritalin-based meds (concerta, daytrana) and I have my bouncing big boys back when the meds are wearing off.

We had similar problems with my 10yo on adderall when he was younger.

Dump the doctor!!

Thank you all very much.

The doc upped his meds to 50 mg of Vyvanse which has worked well for the two days he's been on it so far. He just has been staying up very late is all.

The psych wants to see him back in two weeks and I told my husband that he will not be following up with that doc again. I am going to contact his ped doc tomorrow and see if handles kids on meds.

Thank you so much!!

Ask your dr about anxiety. I was convinced my son was bi polar based on his behaviors and book on it that I read. My son had the same issues and said the same stuff your son said. His dr treated the anxiety then the adhd and he has been doing well for months now.

Ped doctors don't know anything. I went to 3 of them and they really don't know anything. You need to find a behavioral specialist. They know a whole lot more about the meds and the combinations and dosages.Would that be a counselor?

I was thinking the same thing about my son having Anixty and I'm trying to get him tested.

Lex has OCD issues as well as ODD issues. Once we started handling the ADD issues, we got to see other problems and is how she got diagosed with the Mood Disorder. We changed her meds 13 times in 9 months...so try and try again! You doing what's right for your child! and KEEP THE FAITH!

My son is on 50mg Vyvance also and due to extreme hairpulling they put him on abilify wich just went up to 5mg.  In the middle of total neuro but last doctor said he had OCD????  No change so far but he is very high anxiety!  meds???  Thinking of asking a pschic!!  They may do better

But from articles I have read ( no clue where sry) most kids are bi-polar if they have bad enough ADHD.

Just adding labels I think??
