Well I just found out that my daughter scored below profiecent on the NJ ASK Test. She is in all standard classes and gets A's and B's on her report card. She has a 504 and even took the test in small group and not timed!!! I feel so bad!! I know she is at least average intelligence but there is always some kind of a set back. I love her so much!!! But sometimes I feel like she is a square peg.
There are other ways to test proficiency. The school can prepare a portfolio of her work and submit that. They don't like to do it because it takes more time, and they're only allowed a small percentage of students to do that for. I'd check with her special ed teacher, or maybe the principal, to see how worried they are about her scores, and if a portfolio might be better for her than a test. The only thing standardized tests measure is a child's memory recall and test taking strategies. It does not even begin to provide an accurate assessment of the child's knowledge or intelligence. They often don't even ask questions about what the children have been taught that year (or at all). Last year, here in Maryland, they changed our standardized test to be more in line with the state curriculum. Guess what? Huge jump in test score across the board. Just another way to show that they are basically a meaning less waste of time.
