I first suspected my daughter had ADHD in kindergarten last year. On the second day of 1st grade, I took her to a psychologist to get her evaluated. Sure enough, she was diagnosed with ADHD. Her teacher describes her the same as your daughter's teacher describes her. She said she is very bright, but she loses focus. She will give a three part instruction. My daughter always misses out on the last part. Her teacher said she will watch my daughter work alone at her desk. If my dd has a quesiton for the teacher, she will leave her desk to go to the teacher's desk to ask a question, but by the time she gets there she has forgotten her question because she has been distracted by something else. You can see it on the papers she brings home, too. She starts the paper out perfectly, but by the time she gets to the last 3 or 4 problems/questions, she gets them wrong because she loses focus. She has the combined type which includes hyperactivity and impulsiveness. She wanders the room a lot, goes to the bathroom multiple times because she hates to sit still, says inappropriate things without first stopping to think about what is coming out of her mouth. It sounds like your daughter just has the inattentive type which is sometimes harder to recognize, especially in girls. She must have a very good and observant teacher. Be thankful for that.
Teachers have a lot of experience in recognizing the symptoms of ADHD. If your daughter does have ADHD, it is best to seek treatment now than to wait because things will only get worse as they get older. Every year, they are sometimes unable to retain what they learned from the previous year because they were not able to focus and pay attention.
Our 3rd grade teacher was the one that suggested we get him tested so we did both at the school and privatly. the private eval was more extensive and really sorted out what was going on with my ds. I used that eval to get a 504 for my son as he is gifted but ADHHHHHHD. We started on medication shortly after that and things have really come around for him and us as a family.I went to a parent conference todayfor my soon to be 6 year old daughter. Her teacher told me she was doing excellent and told me she thinks she is really smart but she is having a focus problem. If she tells her to do something she does it but if it involves more than one thing she does the first thing and then forgets the rest. She said she seems like she is paying attention but she'll ask her a question and she seems confused. As for her learning she is well above her expectations, but she thought it would be a good idea to have her evaluated for ADD.
I'm not very familiar with add does this sound like she could have it. What are some other symptoms. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Go ahead and get her tested. If the teacher suspects ADHD there's probably a reason for it. And they don't just slap the label on kids and shove medicine down their throat - it is quite a battery of exams, and good doctors can really pinpoint what's going on with a kid, and what can be done to help them to get a handle on it. My son has a pretty significant case of ADHD, but he's not medicated because changes in his environment are managing it. Nothing is automatic. And as scary as it is, really, it's better when you know what you're dealing with so you can choose a course of action than sitting around wondering what you should do.
Best of luck!
