New** Daughter just diagnosed with ADHD | ADHD Information

Share

Hi,

I'm new to this boards.  This is a message board I never wanted to be a member of.  My daughter who will be 8 in Dec was just diagnosed with adhd by a phsycologist.  We went to see her ped. today and she said that adhd usually isnt a diagnosis alone.  Its the secondary to something else.  She wants us to go see a a phsyciatrist now to determine if she has any mental illness.  Is it possible to have a diagnosis of adhd without anything else??  The phsycologist said that she also had an auditory processing disorder but thr ped. doesnt think that this counts as a secondary condition.  Please help.

My sons don't have a second diagnosis.  But a psychatrist is good to go see with getting diagnosis right and if you decide to medicate manage your medication. Aaron'smom39732.2524074074

Welcome to the board! I have a son who is adhd and nothing else although a psychiatrist in the past dx'd him bipolar and gave him meds that almost destroyed him. It is possible to just be adhd without accompanying mental disorders. Because your  child was just dx'd at age 8, she may have issues of self esteem or may be depressed. Perhaps you could have her seen by a behavioral psychologist so she can work out her feelings. It will help you, also.

There is nothing that a parent did or did not do to make their child adhd. it is a chemical imbalance that can be corrected by medication if the adhd is interfering with the child's everyday life.

It does take a while to get the right medication and the correct dose. Your doctor will probably (hopefully) start with minimal meds to see how it affects your daughter.
