Hi Vickie,

First of all, you are not alone.  You'll find great help in this place.  I'm not near where you are - I'm over by Pittsburgh.  Although I can't help you with doctors, it sure sounds like you need to get him off Strattera immediately - there are other very good ADHD medications out there, and one of them has to work better for him.

Giving medication for ADHD is very much a trial and error thing.  If your heart is telling you he isn't right on the this medication, trust your instincts and try another med.  Over the course of Kindergarten to now 4th Grade, my son has been on short acting Ritalin, extended release Concerta, and now he's just switched to Adderall because he wasn't sleeping well or functioning well anymore on the Concerta.  Just less than 2 weeks on Adderall and he's like a new kid!

If you have a doctor that isn't listening to you, find another one.  The good ones ARE out there.

Take it one day at a time, come here to vent, and keep checking back because others will be able to give you encouragement and their experiences too.

I hope you find some encouraging help this week!

Take care,

Michele

My son had a horrible time with strattera, he became depressed and told us he wanted to kill himself so we stopped ( these are side effects of the med). since then he has never exhibited those signs.

I do know that it is weight based and that there is a formula to make sure your son is not taking TOO much. How much does your son weight?

I also wonder if this is NOT the right med for him. Have you tried any others?

He is only 5 and there are so many to chose from.  We took a while to find the right med and then the right dose to level off at. But boy it is worth it!!

You need to make sure he isn't taking too much and then decide if it is the best one for your son.

We have been on concerta & guanfacine for 4 years now and very successful.

Please post any questions!!

hi and welcome. Bethanns right, Strattera is weight based. This sounds like a very high Strattera dose. My daughter takes Strattera (succesfully), her target dose is around 60mg (in 24 hours) and she is over 90 pounds!

What is his weight? I think you're doing the right thing as far looking for a doctor that specializes in ADHD and ADHD meds. Hang in there.

Hi Thank you for your imputs My son Logan is very small for his age he only weighs 40lbs.. I am calling the doctor first thing this morning at 830   I've been doing research and the Strattera just has to go b/c i feel just ruining him totally ....
