Child with ADHD and Disability | ADHD Information

Ive been told by two of my co-workers that having a child with ADHD, they can get on SSD. Anyone done this, and if so the process and steps in doing so?

thank you

i was going to actually ask ppl here if they recieve that for their adhd child. i just got denied for it. i had heard the same thing and i applied for it and they denied me bc they said ds is doing good on his meds at this time and he is avg for his grade level. i was disapointed bc i know ppl in the same situaton that do qualify. all u do is call your local ss office and they will ask u a bunch of questions and send u paperwork. it takes a few months for them to give u an answer. around 120 days. we waited all that time and found out last week that we werent approved. real bummer. i would also like to hear feedback from anyone that knows more about this. should my ds qualify whether he is on meds or not?? i figured if he had something that required daily meds to get him through the day that would count. i know for sure if he wasnt on meds and they would have interviewed me last yr when i had to pull him from school and homeschool him he wouldve qualified then so why not now? they say he has to be severly disable or blind? sorry i dont have more info.

well the ladies i work with, their children are on meds also.
she told me he would need to be evaluated through the school and have an IQ less than 70 and/or get tested for a learning disability which usually comes with people who are ADHD.  And maybe a mental health dr visit as well. but SS usually appoints one of thier own to do that during the time your being processed.
i agree about the meds tho. why should it matter if they are on medication or not?
its like saying someone with schizophrenia isnt disabled because they are on their meds and they are working. Its not normal to have to be on daily medication to function in this world. therefore i would assume, that would be a disablity.

Ive read up alot of places, and alot of ppl say that almost everyone gets denied the first go around. but they say to appeal it, and usually they come through. you might have to do it 2 or 3 times, and its a pain but once approved, thats it. you dont have to do anything anymore. Just keep the re evauations for your child and you should be fine.

im sure alot of it has to do with ppl abusing the system. using their children to get a check every month. I would need it because i miss alot of work, due to trying to keep up with all the apts he has. he is also allergic to everything and sees and allergist.
Father is bipolar so he is limited on the help he can give me, and its very little. his social anxiety keeps him from being able to work, much less sit at a drs office for two hours and keep up with the other younger two children we have. It impossable for him.

i have also heard ppl saying to appeal it a few times and usually they give into it. they sent an evaluation to the teacher to fill out and one to his dr that prescribes his adhd meds. they didnt send one to school last yr bc he was only there 2 or 3 months and i pulled him out. i prob couldve gotten paperwork sent to them to fill out too but i had too man issues with them and do not trust them. i dont want them having anythign to do with my son but thats where he had the most trouble so maybe that set us back i dont know. my mom keeps telling me to get a lawyer but i cant afford that. i think i will read on how to appeal. i beleive they sent me that info along with the letter of denial. like we dont have to already go through enough! thank u for your advice! hopefully we will get approved next time around.

I wish you much luck! Im going to wait until my husband goes for a full evaluation for his bipolar and OCD, and let my son have a re visit with his dr before i make a claim. Do it all at once. Cause it really does sound like a pain.

I also want to have my son tested at the school for a learning disability. His 1st grade teacher told me he needed tutorials, and he maybe had 3 or 4 and then she said he didnt need them anymore. Im not sure if that is because she doesnt want him there or if he is her only student staying after, and she wants to go home. I just dont see how he could have that much of an improvement in only 4 sessions that are only 30mins long. He attended them in kindergarden for about 3 months, twice a week.
Something just isnt right there.
