UPDATE on "Do I have valid concerns?" ... | ADHD Information
Well, I had parent/teacher conferences with my son's 1st grade teacher. She has some of the EXACT same concerns that I do. His handwriting is very poor (at times, illegible) and the reversing the letters while not concerning in and of itself, IS concerning when I explained that he never used to, and that it's gotten worse since last year, not better.
She said he is very inattentive during class (but participates well.... just during instructional times, he goes off in la-la land and starts talking).
She said she's also very concerned with his reading, as I fully expected. He's been at a stand still with reading for at least 6months or so. He wants to enjoy reading but he always chooses books that are too easy (or, he repeatedly gets the SAME book from the library, which she'll now keep an eye on) and therefore, is not challenging himself. She said he's struggling with reading, a lot.
So.... I called the pediatrician to get an appointment to discuss the concerns. I filled out an on-line survery and it came back with an undeniable deficit and that he's a probably candidate for inattentive ADD. We'll see....
For now, at least the teacher and I are both on the same page .... she's going to keep an eye on things and she said if the homework is taking him so long (it SHOULD be taking him 10-15mins, with no more than 30mins AT THE MOST!) to let her know. She'll modify it for him.
Thanks for the insight/support/suggestions!
The handwriting and reading sound sooo familiar. I went through that with my son when he was in 1st grade. During the summer there were a lot of ups and downs, but he seems to have finally gotten the right med/dosage, and is doing much better this year. I haven't seen his handwriting (he lives with his dad now), but his reading has improved dramatically!
