My son clears his throat alot and now that hes started back on meds, hes gotten alot louder and more often.Anyone elses kids have a "tick"what can be done for it?My child....so far...only since March of this year has shown no "ticks", but he does however, chew on his shirt all day....he is soaked from wrist to shoulder almost by the time I pick him up everyday. If I hear of anything to help I will be glad to let you know. Most tics tend to be facial/oral.  My son (a biter until 6) chewed his shirts like nobody's business.  He is a sniffler.  Strattera gave him extreme facial grimaces.  He is not having any tics on Focalin XR.  He has been taking clonidine for 18 months, it helps to suppress tics.  [QUOTE=Diane V]

tics do come and go that is their nature. My daughter has had tics for years on certain stimulants. For whatever reason, like everything, there's no rhyme or reason to which stims increase tics on which person.

Many peole have success with Tenex in suppressing tics. It did not work for us. My daughter currently takes Strattera with Methylin ER and has no tics, but she is also older 14. Most tics disorders begin around age 9. Sometimes hard to know if the tics would be there anyway. Tic disordeers co-exisitng with ADHD is quite common. Anxiety WILL increase tics. Transient childhood tic disorders can subside on their own with age for some.

Everyone is different in thier apporach. We've ALWAYS addressed tics and if they were bad we changed meds or stopped the stimulants altogether. Others try adding something for tics, otehrs live with it. It is really individual and something you should discuss with your doctor

Thanks for your input...I think I will talk to the doctor about this.  I'd rather not give him other meds ...yet I'm not totally opposed either.  I think I need to research more and keep close tabs.  The teachers have not said anything and actually no one in the family has said anything either.  I'm really the only one who has noticed them, I suppose.  I just don't want to over react.  Again, thank you for your info.

Can ticks come and go?  I have noticed my son make grimaces with his face  on occasion but then it seems to go away.  He takes Focalin XR (has been since he was 4 and he is now 7) and up until this summer I never noticed them before.  He started doing them again recently.  How do you know if it is just a bad habit vs. tick?

My son started yvanse 40mg a week ago.

My son does the throat clearing "thing", it really does come and go. He is on concerta and has had this for some time. His doctor told us to ignore it. My son will tell me he has phlem. I have asked him if he realizes it and he doesn't really, except when he says he is clearing his throat.

Is your son's that disruptive to his class/classmates?  I really wouldn't like others to tease him or make any mention of it. have you told the doctor?

My son also had the throat tic thing as well as eye roles on vyvance.  We utimately changed to a dexidrine for a different reason, but to control the tics he took cogentin (benzatrophine) which works really well.

my son does roll his eyes up leaving his head straight.I noticed him doing that when he clears his throat.

My daughter also used to clear her throat a lot.  Both stimulants and non do have a dehydrating effect.  We have to basically force my daughter to drink (a lot), water, milk, juice, sprite, whatever we can get out hands on.  And that has stopped the throat problem.

When you read the side effects for adults it mentions dry mouth.  My daughter started at 5 (now 7) and i don't think she could express that her mouth was dry, she was just dealing with it the best she could.  I have let her teachers know that she needs to drink a lot of water durning the day, and it has stopped the problem.

Just my two cents.
