new to ADHD board..daughter diagnosed | ADHD Information

If you have a diagnosis and have been told that medication can help, consider it.  It's not like irreversible surgery.  If you don't see results, change tracks.  No one wants to medicate their child.  But my son has responded so well, even my reluctant husband has come around.  I read somewhere that it is super common for parents to disagree on medicating.  We saw several doctors, worked with therapists, had medical tests (MRI and EEG) sought the advice of his teachers.  Also had tons of testing done to determine why my son was the way he is (he is 9)  Lack of self esteem can be so damaging, it's hard enough to be a teenager today.  You have one chance to parent your children, and I have always tried to do everything possible to help them succeed.  Good luck.Hello. I am new to this board and just have some ?'s. My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed w/ adhd and auditory process problems.  Her IQ was tested and it is very high. She is very smart but seems to have problems concentrating and getting anything done.  I am very frusterated bc even after the diagnosis her dad still thinks she just has a problem listening. Thats where the auditory prob. comes in. I was told that she doesnt always process what people tell her and thats why she sometimes just acts like she isnt listening.

While at the formal diagnosis with dr. I was talking to her about my 14 year old.  He is having problems in school with grades, homework and just lack of motivation for anything. I was reading one of the posts on here and it sounded just like my son. I will sit with him for hours and make sure he does his homework just for him not to turn it in. He grades are getting worse and he has a very low self-esteem. It doesnt help that his dad is always riding him about how he is. I feel bad and don't know what to do. He was given a general test for adhd in school..the conners test..and it came back that he didn't have any significant problems.  I feel like this is wrong especially since sounds just like alot of the kids with adhd. I am wondering if he was tested by a specialist if it would turn up that he has the same thing as my daughter.

Im just happy to find somewhere I can vent and if anyone has any suggestions feel free to reply.  The specialist for my daughter told me i should think about putting her on meds so she doesn't struggle so much in school. Her dad is against this and but I would consider it if it would help her.  There are just so many choices and I've heard so many bad things about Ritalin...

Well I hope to hear from some people with suggestions for me..

Thanks for reading.
