teenager beginning meds | ADHD Information

My son is on clonidine .05 mg at bedtime and Adderall 5mg once a day. The doctor said that it helps get the child to sleep. As the Adderall were's out of the system they can get over stimulated and hyper making it hard to sleep when it is time. I have found that he doesn't seem to need the clonidine and am having him taken off of it. Clonidine is a heart medication that is used in the treatment of ADHD children to help them sleep. Be very careful with it however because you cant miss more than one dose as it can cause a sudden spike in blood pressure even in those who do not have a problem with bloodpressure.

yea definately watch his meds. my friends feen for my medication . they get so excited over it even though i hate it.. Be careful if he already has tics because most ADHD meds worsen or intensify tics in people that are prone to them.It is very comforting to have good health professionals.  Ensure you are comfortable and your pediatrician and child psychiatrist are thorough.  Makes all the difference!!!!I have been surfing this website now for over an hour and I'm SO nervous about starting my teenager who has ADD on meds. He suffers from tics, and the doctor suggests he take Clonidine and Adderall. I've read the success stories on this website but the side effects, particularly the cardia ones of Adderall TERRIFY me. I want him to begin feeling successful in school because he struggles so much but I'm terrified that these drugs may harm him. Any words of advice from parents or teenagers out there are greatly appreciated.

Just be sure to start him out slow to make sure everything is ok. Also be sure to keep careful track of his meds. Amphetamines are very addicting so look for the telltale signs of potential drug abuse. Its probably best to keep hold of the meds and give him just what he needs for that day.

Good luck,
Lee
