To put on meds or not? | ADHD Information

Meds as a part of the overall treatment plan is a very individual decision. She is young and may need meds more when she gets to about 3rd grade when the teaching is less friendly to ADHDers. Or you may give meds a trial run and see if they help her achieve more. Getting the right med and dose can be easy or can take a bit of trial and error.

Also, some psychologists are somewhat anti-med and went to school to learn counselling because they saw this a a good way to help people. Many psychologist are uncomfortable with meds and they are not even licensed to prescribe meds, where as psychiatrists are very comfortable with meds. We had one of these psychologists that originally did not like meds, but over the years she had found that they could be very helpful, and she refferred my youngest to a psychiatrist because she felt meds would be essential for treatment.

We waited until my youngest was in crisis (depressed, anxious, wanted to die, no self esteem, etc) before we got a diagnosis and started treatment (meds, behavior plan, IEP). We did not have an opportunity to go slow with her. With my oldest, we worked for several years on her organizational skills and finally added meds in the 6th grade. THey are all different and have differen needs.

Whatever you decide, you will find help and support here.

Hello. My daughter is 6 and was recently diagnosed with adhd and an auditory processing disorder. The psychologist and adhd dept that i took her too at the hospital recommended I try putting her on a med during school hours to calm her down. The problem i have is im getting conflicting reports. I talked to her teacher in school and met w/ school psychologist and we discussed her iep. her teacher said with some modifications *sitting close to the teacher, giving her extra time for tests, teacher giving her personal directions* to name a few she is keeping up with her classmates. she goes for speech help for auditory processing prob and math/reading support in school. The school psych doesnt feel my daughter she needs to be put on meds with the modifications there making for her in school.  I dont want to seem like im just jumping on the med band wagon but i feel this will benefit her. She is very easily distracted and needs to be given directions a few times to get it but I dont know what to think about the conflicting recommendations from school and drs. Any suggestions or anyone also have problems with this issue?
