I recently started taking generic Wellbutrin XL for my ADHD. I'm interested to know if anyone else is taking Wellbutrin XL for ADHD (my understanding is that it is primarily as an anti-depresant and to help you quit smoking) and how it has worked for you.

I take Wellbutrin as part of my medication therapy to treat my ADD. I also take Adderall and Celexa. Initially I was given Wellbutrin for depression but didn't work. At that time I wan't diagnosed with ADD and depression another symtom of my ADD.
Last February I went to see a psycharist because I was feelin suicidal and didn't know what to do about. I had always been treated for depriessinon and had tried every medication and nothing worked. Then in March while having a conversation with my Doctor I mentioned to him that I had seen a documentary on PBS about ADD and I thougt that I might have it. He prescribed Adderall and kept me on the Wellbutrin and Celexa for my depression and irritabilty. Well it was like night and day. In one day I felt like I had just awoken from a 20 year sleep. I was shocked about the difference in my emotional state from one day to the next. I was still cautious because I have had good response from medications only to have them become less effective over a few weeks.
Well not only did it not wear off it has saved my life. I am less reactive and have actually been able to create some space in my mind to that I don't react but now I can choose my response more appropriately.
Wellbutrin has really helped with my depression and in addition it is the only medication that has a stimulating effect on the brain. My daily dose of Adderall is 60 mg but without the Wellbutrin it probably would have been higher. For me Wellbutrin has a calming and stablizing effect on my mood.
You didn't mention whether you are taking a specfic stimulant for your ADD. If your not I would ask your doctor for a prescription and continue taking the Wellbutrin to see how they work in conjunction with one another.

It made me lathargic and dopy, at times I felt more depressed. Told it would also increase libido, didn't seem to and I didn't bother to try and quit smoking. I eventually stopped taking it. Good bad, it probably reacts different with any given DNA.Works well for some folks, especially those who tend to need mood stabilizing. Others, not so great.
And yes, sometimes it's given for ADHD of the moody sort.

Thanks for your responses. It helps to know there are other people out there dealing with these issues. The wellbutrin XL has helped my mood and depression, but I am still having trouble concentrating. I'm supposed to see my doctor tomorrow so we'll see what happens.
You might want to see about adding a med for concentration if the wellbutrin is working for the other symptoms.|
