Focalin and Paranoia? | ADHD Information
[QUOTE=hissmom]Her teacher says it looked like she was playing with the other girls. Tonight she says it's like someone spread a rumor or something. She has been a lot more sensitive than normal. Last week she refused to participate in a school wide art contest because they told her she wouldn't get her picture back. She cried and cried about it. Tonight she was all upset about a drink that a friend had bought her and she didn't like. She felt really bad that she didn't drink it and that it would be wasted. O guess she is just overly sensitive.

Something I thought about if the contest is open or another comes up.
Promise to take a digital photo or scan of the art and make a print for her to keep. Artists do this all the time.
See if she goes for that
[QUOTE=hissmom]I threw in the towel and put her back on Ritalin La 20mg. Last night she told me she was grumpy and sad all day and didn't know why. The Focalin makes her way to sensitive and anxious. Ritalin definitely does not work well enough but at least she's not an emotional mess on it. On Dec 3 she goes to see a psych who only prescribes meds to kids so I will switch to something else then.
The focalin also makes her hyperfocus on certain subjects so she will talk about them constantly. That could be contributing to her recess problems. Thankfully, she only displays her ODD behaviors at home.
Thank You all so much for your input. I don't know what I would do without this board!!!!

December 3 isn't that far away so just hang in there until you see what your options are

hissmom :
Could your DD be telling the truth and the other children are finding play with her to be difficult due to ODD behaviors?
delia:
Periods of nightmares in some children will occur off and on. Is he saying what he's dreaming about?
I know ritalin can cause nightmares in some kids.
If they're "normal" short term nightmares--Monster Spray or Monster Conkers usually help
My ds was emotional and sad while on the focalin xr! But we were also trying some amino acids too. So not sure which was causing it! He was even telling me he wanted to stab himself in the heart with a pencil while on the two! The focalin was added latter! Then the emotional issues started!
Pulled him off every thing and he was fine. Maybe try a med free weekend and see if anything is diffrent? Lots of people do med free weekends.
I would also check if the more emotional time is when the meds are wearing off. That can happen too! Just a thought!
I would ask the Dr. If this is a good Idea on the weekends!
hope this helps!!
hello all,
just thought I would chime in on what we've had this first week on focalin 10mg mornings.....booster dose first time today.........
All teachers agreed all week 8-3p.m. he's been wonderful...afterschool daycare however 5yr old ds has thrown his shoes, a CHAIR, pencils all at his teacher. Havent been to sleep much this week because something scares him most of the night. I recorded him screaming last night to show his dr tomorrow. I thought ok maybe he just needs to get it into his system so I tried the booster dose today at lunchtime and his teacher asked please to not ever do that again. For real????
I only wanted to share what we've had happen with the focalin...maybe just not for us, you know?
best wishes hissmom!!! I really hope it gets better or maybe alittle easier for you.
B.J.
Oh, in that case the dx ADHD Innatentive with ODD.
What's the dx? I can't find it in the post?
[QUOTE=hissmom]Is the dx the dosage? If so, its Focalin Xr 10mg in am and focalin 5mg after school.
Thanks!

Sorry, dx is "diagnosis"
DD is on 10mg Focalin Xr in the AM and 5mg Short Acting Focalin in the afternoon. Her teachers say she is doing well at school but she is having trouble at recess. She says no one will play with her and everyone runs away from her. Could she be paranoid? Recess seems to be the only problem. Everything is fine during class.
Just wondering if anyone else had this side effect.
Thanks!
We didn't have THAT issue ... but although the medication did not initially cause any issues with aggression and my son, it started to within the last 2 weeks (taking into account he had a lot going on with his favorite teacher going out on Maternity leave). I immediately took him off of it and he'll start on 5mg of Adderall XR tomorrow.
No idea on the paranoia... as my son is autistic and I'm not sure how easy it'd be for me to tell if he was having paranoiac episodes.
Good luck trying to figure it out!
Did you confirm what she's telling you by independent source?
She's likely telling you what she feels is going on, but without context [like some kids are running and why] there's no way of knowing what's really happening for the little muffin...
