Concerta? Advice.... | ADHD Information

going crazy- have you tried Melatonin? My son has taken it for 2 years and so far it has helped him with his poor sleep habits. It is OTC and in the natural area.If kids are crying over everything I have to wonder.

Do these kids cry a lot while not on the drug?

Parents out there:

Keep a med diary for your child, really. It will give you an overview of good/not so good and help your doctor give you the right doses and medications.

Little kids can't keep track of whether, in the long haul they are better or worse off and you really need a more "neutral" judge over the longer term.

ADHD causes some emotional regulation struggle to begin with. It can also be co-morbid with different forms of depression.

steffnblake:

Most medication causes some side effects.

You have to decide if the gains are greater than the drawbacks. You have to notice which side effects are a result of the medication and which are simply the results of having ADHD.

There might be some 'rebound' hyperness but I've found for myself that it tends to be between doses. Or maybe I'm just used to a little bit of improvement and when that's gone the ADHD seems more noticeable.

I think a med diary might help sort this out for you

And welcome aboard all!
You could try Ritalin LA instead of Concerta.  It's supposed to last 8 hours (only lasted 6 for us).   10 mg would be the equivalent of 2 - 5 mg doses.

Hi,

My son was diagnosed last year.  We decided to medicate. Tried Ritalin 5mg once in the morning and it actually worked!  the problem was that it wore off by noon.  The Dr. switched him to Concerta 18mg for the long lasting effect.  the problem is I don't really know if we like it.  It seems to me that he is more emotional (i.e. cries at the drop of a hat) and his teacher noted that he seems more anxious during class.  Any other parents share this concern and have any advice?  I'm just not sure if this is the best we're gonna get...I guess my question is can you really give meds for ADHD combined type and have NO side effects?

Also, has anyone noticed a rebound?  Meaning when the meds have worn off it seems as though their energy level triples?

steffnblake39783.2927777778Hi, My daughter has been on concerts 63mg a little more than a year. I have found that concerta has helpped with the adhd but like your son my daughter has become more emotional and cries over everything. Concerta has been great for my daughter in someways..she is more attentive in school and has made great improvments and can now do things for more than a few minutes....the part about concerta i don't like is that my daughter is up all hours of the night.
