New problems or normal pre-teen? | ADHD Information

Share

My dd is almost 10, and has started developing. I'm wondering if some of the issues I'm seeing lately are simply the beginnings of hormones or new issues, possibly due to higher meds?

Let me illustrate. This is a conversation that went on the other night.

DD "can I give my Barnies a bath?"

Me: "Sure" (beginning of problem- NEVER tell an ADHD child ok unless you know exactly what the plan is. I still haven't learned this!)

Next thing I know, she's bringing the Barbie tub down the hall, spilling water all on the laminate wood flooring.

Me: "go put that back in the bathroom!"

She does, and I go to get my bath. As I step in the puddles, I tell her to get a towel and clean it up. I then get her into bed and go to get in the tub. The bathroom tile floor is sopping wet!

Me: "Do no play in the water again. This floor is sopping wet!" (I said this stern;y, but wan't yelling)

DD: "What?"

I loudly repeat what I said. The next thing I know she's sobbing in her room b/c I "yelled" at her!

The other night we got into an argument, and she was ready to leave the house! I don't know what's going on, but between her doing this and stress at school, I'm about to get an ulcer!

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for my chuckle today--especially the "never tell an ADHD kid it's okay until they spill out the whole plan"

Next week you are gonna laff about this--read it back to yourself then

Well she bathed the Barbies, just like she said, since nobody said, "ONLY IN THE BATHROOM SINK DEMMIT!"

After all, where else would Barbie bath except in her very own Barbie bathtub in her very own Barbie bathroom in her very own Barbie house?--which is not IN your bathroom--it's in the bedroom.

Really now mother,  Barbie can not get naked in front of the whole family. Barbie is not a professional stripper until you buy her a dancing pole and a bar full of reprobate Kens that come with their own beer bottles and shot glasses...

Sounds like her brain was orbiting Pluto the first time you said it--so to you, you're repeating yourself, to her, she has no idea why you're raising your voice.

You might try asking, "Do I have your attention? [make sure you have it] Good. Don't bath Barbies except in the people bathtub and even then, dry the floor after."

Keep this one in perspective. It's not a crime--it's an ADHD ditsy moment

Thanks for the laugh! Yeah, sometimes I get aggravated having to repeat myself. I guess part of it is just all the stress I've been under. Last Friday my principal e-mailed me to tell me I had a conference scheduled with her on Mon. NEVER, EVER tell me on the weekend that I have to go talk to someone on Mon. I stressed all weekend (knowing she was calling everybody in and talking one on one!), stressed all day Monday until my meeting, which went really well. Then we had school district tests this week, and my students could care less!

Then I have Christina who does her own little thing, lives in her own little world, and doesn't listen. If I get upset and raise my voice, I don't love her, and no one understands how hard her life is.

She told her teacher the other day she wanted to run away from home a few days ago, but she didn't know where to go! She had herjacket on and was ready to walk out the door. I saw her and told her she was NOT going to walk out the door. She started crying harder and said how no one understands her.

Hmmm. You know, I'm almost beginning to think that I'm going to hear her scream one day that she's bleeding! You know what I mean, ladies!

Dontcha hate that? I know they're trying to be fair and give ya a head's up but please, not on Friday unless ya need some notes or something!

I had one kid gonna run away as soon as she was allowed to cross the main street. Of course a year later, she forgot...

Maybe you could tell her you want to run away too. Then you could both "run away" to the park with a kite and a bucket of chicken in your backpacks...

She will no doubt be expiring dramatically on the spot. Camille will have nothing on this Oscar winning scene...[warm up your camcorder]

Really though--explain " girly things" early Less drama.

Sounds very similar to my almost 12 your old daughter!    Say something with the wrong tone and you can get your head bit off.   She hates me, I'm mean, etc, etc.   Having a preteen daughter is so much fun.  My oldest was never this sassy or moody.   I'm thinking her lack of impluse control and emotional regulation issues just magnify the normal hormonal stuff.   She will definitely keep my on my toes throughout the teenage years.   (BTW - she also just started about 2 weeks ago.   She took it MUCH better than her older sister - who cried for days.)

Good luck...know you are not in this fun stage alone!

Of course she hates you and you're mean. That's what moms do.
It's your job to keep her from being run over by a bus[which, if she ever admitted it, was not something she wanted to do, anyway]

She has ADHD remember? She probably forgot what was going on until she felt "damp" a few times a day.

Good luck...know you are not in this fun stage alone!

Watching you moms makes me feel sorry for my mother. Once I "forgot" and was tree climbing. I got a cramp and grabbed myself [forgot I was in a tree] and fell out, face first.

My mom was NOT impressed that she had to buy me new glasses AGAIN...

Her latest pair of glasses lasted less than 3 days!  They went through the washer/dryers,  the lens popped out one side and they came out melted and mutilated.   We were able to save the lenses and the luckily, the eye doctor replaced the frames free of charge...
HorseMom39795.4713888889That beats my record by about 2 weeks

Kept busting them up getting hit in the face during road hockey. Used to sneak into the basement and hope my dad would fix them before my mom found out I broke them again
