Welcome Bounce,

Glad you have joined the board and looking forward to hearing from you as the season goes on. Happy Holidays.

Welcome to the board Bounce. So glad you could join us. You will find this to be a very supportive environment.Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself.  I'll be spending some time reading topics and might jump in from time to time.

I'm so glad I found this group.  I've been feeling so lost and a little sad lately.  That all comes and goes.

I have 4 kids.  My oldest son is 9yo and he was diagnosed with ADHD - Inattentive type when he was 7yo.  He was also diagnosed with an Auditory Processing Disorder and Dyslexia.  It all seems quite overwhelming at times.  He takes Metadate 20mg.  I always feel like I should be doing more.

My second son is 7yo.  He has no diagnosis of anything but he is definitely quirky, a bit hyper (always moving and making a ton of noise), and more defiant.  He does fine in school - loves it actually, thank heavens.

My two little boys are 2.5yo.  They are typical toddlers.  Both are in speech therapy due to delayed language.  I'm watching one very closely since he's very much like his big brother was at that age.  Actually he's a bit like both of them (the 9yo's attention and language, the 7yo's attitude) - which strikes the fear of god into me but he's very young so I'm not worrying quite yet.

This seems like a great group and I look forward to joining in.

Welcome to the forum.  You will receive a lot of support and a lot of good ideas here.  Christmas time must be a lot of fun in your household.

Was the metadate the first meds your 9y/o was put on for his adhd?

Look forward to seeing you post!

Randy

Please DO!

It's normal, under the circumstances. It's hard when you're dealing with troubled children and are unsure of why their behaviour seems so difficult when you're trying your best as a parent.

You're doing your best under the circumstances. As you go along you'll learn more of how to deal with it.

Welcome aboard!
I didn't know they made a generic.  Will have to check into it because for some reason our insurance doesn't cover Metadate at the same rate as some other ADHD meds but I'm just paying it rather then tinker with something that works ya know?

I feel really fortunate that we had success with the first med.
Yes, it's Methylin ER--the only difference is it is a tablet rather than a capsule. For us, it's a fraction of the price! :)

Thanks for the welcome :)

Metadate is the fist med he's taken.  It seems to work pretty good.  It wears off by the time he gets home from school.  Homework is hard.  He is in TKD two evenings and is so distracted there.

He is on an IEP for speech.  He goes to resource room for help in reading but much to my dismay, and written complaint, they are not doing anything specifically for the dyslexia.  We are doing a dyslexia program through the Scottish Rite, which is proven to work but it is a 2yr program if you do it 5 days a week.  We don't get it done more then once a week usually. I wish we had access to a FastForward program.  I think that would help the most.  We live to far away to reasonably make that commute.

Welcome to the board! Is your school doing something to help your son with the dyslexia? Sometimes, schools can be a big help.

We've had success with Metadate, too. DS uses the extended release 20 mg generic (well, that's when the doctor remembers to WRITE down the generic). I'm glad the first thing you tried worked--I understand it can be a real challenge sometimes to find the right drug for the given child.
