uplifting news | ADHD Information

Happy Holidays everyone! I thought I would drop a quick line and give out some good news for a change.

Both my kids are adopted (foster care - 2 years ago) Son is 9 and my daughter is 7 - siblings. Both have ADHD - different issues though. We started ds on Concerta in March and it worked beautifully - just had to increase meds but it worked.

Our daughter was having difficulty this year - getting into trouble at school, behaving badly, hanging out with kids that weren't nice to her and they did mean things to other kids,  and she was never able to finish a single task without constant re-direction. I had to either speak or go to the principal's office 3 times in 4 weeks.  I couldn't believe it - so we took her to her therapist again and her doctor. Dx - ADHD - innattentive & impulsive. We started her on Concerta as well - went from 18 mg - 54mgs really quickly and we seem to be on the right track.

She was never able to start and finish anything....now she sits and draws beautiful, detailed pictures. Or she writes stories with a beginning, middle and an end. She is befriending nicer children in school. She is calm, attentive and the first thing she said to the doctor after the first month on meds (without prompting) " I feel better in school now". Even though she seemed like a really happy child - she wasn't. Now that she can control her impulses and focus on school (which now she thinks is too easy - she actually asked her teacher for harder homework - I AM NOT KIDDING) she is truly happy.

I fought meds for both kids for a long time but now that I see them flourishing, excelling (my son is in math club, chess club and computer club after school) and making friends - I now believe medication can really help.

I hope this posting helps. And again HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

I am so happy for you and your children. Yes, meds do help. They actually save our kids lives!

My son moved up quickly on concerta, and then leveled off at 72mgs for 3 years. He was 7 at the time. My son is also hyperactive, impulsive, etc.

Thank you for posting your update. It helps those still not sure of med learn from another family.

What your describing is quality of life for your children because now they have the ability to make a choice and an opportunity to meet their full potential because they are focused. Medication is a first line of treatment, not a last resort and Im so glad  you decided to share your thoughts here as it is encouraging  news for many.  Decisions should always be made based on accurate knowledge, not fear because we only fear what we don't understand and the earlier the child gets effective treatment, the better the outcome down the road. Congratulations to you for your successes with your children and may you and your family have a very happy holiday season
