Problems with DS’s weight | ADHD Information

My son drinks that carnation instant breakfast stuff at least once a day.  I think it helps.

You could encourage more healthy high fat foods.  My son is 9yo and not so interested in changing how he eats - or in eating even a small snack when he isn't hungry.  Maybe a 14yo could reason that out a little more?  I don't know - but good luck.  My son is 'underweight' but then he was underweight before he started the meds so I think it is just the way he is.

My 14 year old DS has been on Adderall for 4 1/2 years now with great success.  His dosage hasen't even changed in almost 3 years.  The only problem is his appetite.  He still doesn't eat much and it's a challenge to get him to put any weight on.   He's now 5'7 and only 93lbs.  Both his father and I are very thin too so I doubt he's going to be big but I'm just concerned about him putting on some weight.

He will see the dr in about 3 weeks for a check up.  I'm just concerned that she might want to take him off the meds or switch the med to get him to gain weight.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to gain weight?

That's a good idea about mixing in the healthy foods with the high calorie ones.  My DS will eat just about anything I give him.  He loves fruit and veggies, so that's easy.  He usually fixes himself a big hot fudge sundae every night before bed.  My dr suggested it to him as a way to gain weight.

Bounce - That's how my son is.  He's always been skinny but so are his dad and I, so I don't think he's going to be big anyway.

He has been drinking the Protein shakes and the Carnation Instant Breakfast for about 2 months now.  I was SHOCKED to see him on the scale yesterday and he's gained 5lbs since November.  He's up to 97 lbs now.  I think one of his biggest problems is that he grew about 6" in the last year and he didn't put any weigt on.  Hopefully he'll start evening out now.

Hey, all,

One thing that's worked well for us is the "pupu platter." We set out a tray of cheese, crackers, cookies (yes, to add a little calorie content), vegies, and fruit slices. It can be covered up and returned to the fridge. We'll use this on weekends, to get DS to nibble regularly.

Also--how about ice cream?

With a kid not on meds, I would certainly be watching the high cal foods, but yes, I am more concerned keeping weight *on*, so I don't mind the higher calories. We try to mix "fun" foods with healthy ones, of course.

My son 10, has a hard time with weight also. He just started Concerta and is already having eating issues at 18mg. Not looking forward to our med hike next week as he is not even eating breakfast before he takes his meds as it is now. Good Luck Carnation Instant Breakfast are a great meal sustitution or addition.
