He has not had any problems with his asthma and/or allergies. I am hoping he has outgrown the asthma. The singulair is definately a wonder drug for asthma and allergies, but I would rather deal with a runny/stuffy nose than the behavorial problems it caused. And yes, each child is different and it affects everyone differently.
As for the asthma, I think he developed it due to being premature. He was born at 29 weeks and was very tiny and had to fight to live. He is my adopted and only child and is very special to me. He has grown up to be a normal size child and is very smart. Thankfully, the only thing he developed was asthma.
I do plan to keep his appt in January. If he does infact have adhd, I want him to get treated for it. But, I turely believe the singulair played a big role in his behavior.
Yes, I have spent hours on this computer reseaching adhd and the side effects of singulair. It's funny that the some of the side effects of singulair are so much like ADHD symptoms...
Happy New Years to all
I took my 5 son off his Singulair for allergies and after his appt today with his counselor, she said he may not be ADHD. He actual appt with the Dr. is not until Jan 21, 2009. She talked about counceling it today and just monitoring him over the next few weeks. I said I wanted to keep the appt, just in case something goes haywire with him. It took like almost 3 mos to get the appt.
He has been off his singulair for about 7weeks now and we have seen major improvements in his behavior. If I had to judge him on a scale from 1 to 10 with a 10 being perect, I would give him a 8. Before coming off the singulair, maybe a 3 or 4.
The only issue we have with him in school and home is he TALKS to much. He is doing great accademically, but he just can't keep his mouth shut. He is still pretty active, but no where near as hyper as before. He use to get frustrated very easily, but that has calmed down a lot as well. Overall, he is so much better than before when he was on singulair. The counselor actually had brought up the concerns about how singulair has been known to cause behavioral problems and off to the computer I went to do some reseach. I found this website: www.medications.com and to my surprise, singulair is the 2nd most med with comments...very interesting info and explained alot of my sons issues...
He is adopted and was already on this med, so we did not get to see his behavior before going on singulair. He had been on this med for 4yrs...4yrs of this behavior that we thought was ADHD and may have been this med the entire time.
Happy new year to everyone and I wish you all well.
