Medication Issues...Again | ADHD Information

I had posted about a month ago about my four year old son, Gregory.  He had seen his pediatrician, who is a "behavior specialist", and had been given a diagnosis of ADHD and started on a low dose (10 mg) of Metadate, with a teaspoon of Methylin given in the afternoons "as needed".
During the day, from about 7 a.m. until 2 p.m., we had seen a great deal of improvement.  From 2-7 at night, however, was a nightmare.  That's where the Methylin came in.  Still, it did cause him to have sleepless nights, and to wake very early in the morning.
Anyway, we've been on Christmas break for the past week, so we've been waiting until about 9 or 10 a.m. to give him the Metadate.  This has worked well, as he's manageable in the mornings, and this would cause it to stay in his system until about 4 or 5, at which time he would get his Melatonin anyway.  This also allowed him to sleep until about 7:30 every morning, which was amazing!  Still, with him returning to his daycare on Monday, we knew this wasn't a permanent fix, so we took your suggestions, and saw a pediatric neurologist.
The neurologist agreed with the diagnosis, and wanted to stay with the Metadate, as he seems to be tolerating it well, but agreed that there is room for improvement.  He told us to up his morning dose from 10 mg to 15 mg, and then to give him a second 10 mg Metadate at 1 p.m.  BIG MISTAKE!  All day long, Greg played with his mouth...sucking in his cheeks, messing with his lips, making swishing sounds, etc.  Not normal for him.  He sat on the couch most of the day and would not play like normal.  And, the worst part...he didn't go to bed until 11, and was then up at 5 this morning.  I just laid in bed and cried.  I feel like we're right back where we started.
As it's New Year's Day, we can't get ahold of the neurologist.  What should I do for today?  Go back to giving him just one 10 mg until I can talk to the doctor tomorrow?  Try the 15 mg and 10 mg again?  I don't want to have another day/night like yesterday.
Any suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated!
I would go back to the 10mg if you have it. You are dealing with tics from too high a dose. My son has them as well, it is from anxiety which the meds can cause. Then call the doctor asap. My son had the same thing happen with Vyvanse so we switched to concerta and they are almost gone. at 4 you don't have as much choices with medication so .....Let us know!

i also agree with spamula.  Go back to what was working for your son.  If he can do OK until 9 or 10 am for his first meds, why not have his preschool give it to him then?   Don't give up. It usually takes time and tears to find the right meds at the right dose and then it usually changes as the child grows.
