Adderall XR making my son SLEEPY!! | ADHD Information

Share
Sleepy on ADHD meds is normal (if you have ADHD).  That's why the naysayers always point out that the classrooms are "full" of kids zoned out on ritalin.  If you need ADHD meds then they work reverse of what you'd expect from the normal population.

When I take my dexedrine I feel calm and centered.  Kids in college take dex when they don't need it and they feel hyper and euphoric.

So I guess you can take solace in the fact that your child needs the meds.  The majority of side effects get better or disappear within months if not weeks.  Just keep your physician updated on how it's working so they can adjust for you.
at least, I'm beginning to suspect that's what the problem is....

My son seems to be having an incredibly hard time staying awake recently. I had thought it was because of having pneumonia (that will wear anyone out!) but this past week, I've noticed the days that I give him the Adderall XR, he falls asleep and takes a pretty lengthy nap (anywhere's from 2-5HOURS!). He didn't even wake up this morning until 9am, so I KNOW he wasn't sleepy  before he took his meds shortly after 9am.

Could the Adderall XR be making him sleepy? Does that mean he doesn't need the meds or that he needs something different? He's only on 5mg so it's not a large dose, help!
Vyvanse did the same thing to my son. I know that is the same type of med
as Adderall. I thought it was really strange as well. A stimulant making you
sleepy? When we saw the doctor, he said that it does happen sometimes.
We gave it some time because we thought it was because of his cold, but
even after he got better, he was still sleepy. He would sleep most of the
afternoon. That line of medication doesn't work for ds. He needs the ritalin
based meds. I would try something else for your son. When I was on Adderall XR, I took a nap like everyday when I got back from school. A lot of the usually- mild side effects weren't horrible, but they were worse than when I just took regular. In the end, it was just easier to take regular Adderall.

Good luck. =-)
