Is Vyvance good? | ADHD Information
My son's doctor started him on 30mg, which is not the lowest dosage (20mg is). We did this so that we had room to move the dosage UP if we needed to, or move it DOWN if we needed to.
Luckily, we didn't have to change the dosage at all, and I suspect he'll be able to maintain this dosage for quite some time. My son is also 6yo (will be 7 in April) and is quite small by nature (he was 45lbs when he started the meds and he has gone down to 42lbs....). The doctor isn't overly concerned about the weight loss at this point as my son has ALWAYS been on the thin side. We've just increased his (good) fat intake and he drinks whole milk now, instead of skim milk. My son has NEVER been a big eater so this isn't any big surprise to us and I'm not even convinced that the meds are what caused him to lose weight since he's been fluctuating between 40-45lbs since he was 4years old.
HTH some more!
My younger son is on Vyvanse and is doing WONDERFULLY on it. He's been on it for over a month now and the turn-around in school has been REMARKABLE! He's earned his sticker every day since starting the med, has not had to move his whale (similar to the green, yellow, red system many teachers use) and has been shining star student TWICE in the last month. His interest in reading has gone WAY up (he had a light bulb moment the other day ... "Mommy, I can actually LEARN FUN stuff from reading").
The only side effect WE'VE had is he has a hard time going to sleep at night, which is helped by him taking clonidine at night-time. He's not perfect and he's still hard to settle, but he DOES go to sleep at a reasonable time (8-8:30).
I hope this helps!
Thank you so much! That is great to hear. If you don't mind me asking, how many mg is he taking. My son is 6 and the doctor suggested 20 mg to start. She said she would put him on the lowest dose possible. I guess it does not hurt to try it out. If I see that he is having a problem, I can stop the medication.
I just realized, he is on 30 mg. I did not notice it before. Thank you so much for the information. My son was just diagnosed with ADHD. The doctor wants to try Vyvance. I have always been against medication and swore I would never use it. However, what the doctor said made sense. I am reading about the side effects and it is making me nervous. My son is not aggressive, does not have a bad temper, is not cranky, goes to sleep by 9:00 each night and is very pleasant. He just cannot sit in his seat in school and does have a hard time focusing. He also does well on tests so he is pretty much picking up on schoolwork even though he is walking around the room. My question is...should I put him on medication? According to other people's reaction to the medication, all of the things that he does not have trouble with will become a problem once he is on the medication. I am wondering if he will be worse off on the medication. I am so confused and not sure what to do.
